FactTreaties, membership, measured data, events.
The world's top oil exporter, an absolute monarchy run day to day by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and remaking its economy under Vision 2030.
See it on the Geopolitics map →The picture
About 35 million people, roughly 40% foreign workers; GDP about $1.1 trillion, the Arab world's largest. Strengths: about 17% of proven oil reserves, OPEC+ leadership and spare capacity, and a Public Investment Fund near $1 trillion. Weaknesses: oil still funds most of the budget, deficits are rising, and giga-projects like NEOM have been scaled back. Allies: the US (major non-NATO ally since 2025) and Pakistan (2025 defense pact). Rival: Iran. Investing: iShares MSCI Saudi Arabia (KSA); Aramco trades in Riyadh.
Why it matters
It sets much of the world's oil price, bankrolls neighbors such as Egypt, and its choices on Israel, Iran and China shape the whole Middle East.
Key facts and numbers
Saudi census and IMF data, OPEC and Energy Institute reserve figures, PIF reports and official agreements. Proven-reserve totals are self-reported, not independently audited. As of 2026.
What to watch
Outlook: whether Vision 2030 can wean the economy off oil, and whether Riyadh normalizes ties with Israel without a Palestinian state, remain open.

▸Saudi Arabia is courted to join Abraham AccordsWidely agreed
The relationship
Saudi recognition is the prize Washington and Israel most want, since the kingdom guards Islam's holiest sites. 2023 talks linked it to a US defense treaty and civil nuclear help, but October 7 froze them. Riyadh now says it will join only with a clear path to a Palestinian state.
Since when and why
US–Saudi–Israeli talks in 2023; revived by Trump in 2025, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's White House visit in November 2025.
How solid?
Public statements by Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi foreign ministry communiqués and US officials. Saudi Arabia has not signed; most analysts see it as the key holdout.
What to watch
Whether Riyadh would settle for a symbolic Palestinian commitment, and whether any Israeli government could offer even that, remains open.
▸Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) is de facto ruler of Saudi ArabiaFact
The relationship
King Salman, born in 1935, remains head of state, but his son Mohammed runs the kingdom day to day as crown prince and prime minister. He controls defense, oil policy, the sovereign wealth fund and security services, having sidelined rival princes in the 2017 Ritz-Carlton anti-corruption detentions.
Since when and why
Riyadh; named crown prince in June 2017, replacing his cousin Mohammed bin Nayef, and prime minister in September 2022.
How we know
Royal decrees naming him to each post, and his chairing of the Council of Ministers and the Public Investment Fund.
What to watch
When he becomes king, how he would rule without his father's cover, and who would succeed him.
▸Saudi Arabia is the dominant member of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)Fact
The relationship
Saudi Arabia has more than half the GCC's people, about half its GDP and most of its military power, and hosts its secretariat in Riyadh. It usually sets the bloc's line on Iran and oil, but smaller members push back: Qatar and Oman run independent diplomacy, and the UAE increasingly competes with Riyadh.
Since when and why
GCC founded in Abu Dhabi in 1981 with its secretariat in Riyadh; the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar (2017–21) ended at the Saudi city of Al-Ula.
How we know
The GCC charter, IMF economic data and the 2021 Al-Ula declaration.
What to watch
Analysts debate how deep the Saudi–Emirati rivalry runs, visible in Yemen, Sudan and oil policy, and whether it could split the bloc.
▸Saudi Arabia competes for regional leadership with IranWidely agreed
The relationship
Since Iran's 1979 revolution the Sunni Saudi monarchy and Shia Iranian theocracy have competed through proxies in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Bahrain. China brokered a détente in 2023. In the 2026 war Iranian missiles and drones hit Saudi targets; Riyadh reportedly struck back inside Iran, then reached a de-escalation understanding with Tehran.
Since when and why
Diplomatic ruptures in 1988 and 2016; the 2019 Abqaiq attack briefly halved Saudi output; the Beijing deal of March 10, 2023; reported Saudi strikes inside Iran in spring 2026.
How solid?
Diplomatic records, the Beijing joint statement, US and UN findings on Abqaiq, and reporting citing Western and Iranian officials on the 2026 Saudi strikes.
What to watch
Debated: whether the rivalry is mainly sectarian or geopolitical, and whether the 2023 détente can survive the 2026 war.
▸Saudi Arabia signed a defense pact with PakistanFact
The relationship
The Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement says aggression against one is aggression against both, formalizing decades of ties: Pakistani troops have guarded the kingdom since the 1970s and Saudi money has repeatedly rescued Pakistan's finances. During the 2026 Iran war, Pakistan deployed about 8,000 troops and a fighter squadron to Saudi Arabia.
Since when and why
Signed in Riyadh on September 17, 2025, by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and PM Shehbaz Sharif; a three-way Mecca pact adding Turkey followed in August 2026.
How we know
The published joint statement, official comments from both sides, and Reuters reporting in May 2026 on the deployment.
What to watch
Whether the pact puts Saudi Arabia under Pakistan's nuclear umbrella, on which officials have sent mixed signals, and how Pakistan squares it with mediating between the US and Iran.
▸Saudi Arabia makes Israel ties conditional on Palestinian statehood and the two-state debateWidely agreed
The relationship
Riyadh says it will not recognize Israel without a credible, irreversible path to a Palestinian state. With France it co-chaired a UN conference in July 2025 that produced the 'New York Declaration' on two states, which the General Assembly endorsed that September.
Since when and why
Saudi foreign ministry statement, February 2024; UN conference in New York, July 28–30, 2025; General Assembly vote, September 12, 2025.
How solid?
Official Saudi statements, the New York Declaration text and the General Assembly vote of 142 in favor.
What to watch
Most analysts take the condition seriously, but debate how firm it really is and whether a vague Israeli commitment could satisfy Mohammed bin Salman.
