Founded in Abu Dhabi on May 25, 1981, during the Iran–Iraq war, and headquartered in Riyadh. Members share a customs union, free movement of citizens and currencies pegged to the dollar (Kuwait's to a basket), and their sovereign funds hold over $4 trillion combined. Unity is fragile: Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, with Egypt, blockaded Qatar from 2017 to 2021. In 2026 Iranian missiles and drones struck most members, testing long-promised joint air defense.
Why it matters
Its members hold much of the world's spare oil capacity and investable capital; their US alignment, wariness of Iran and openness to China shape global energy and finance.
Key facts and numbers
The 1981 GCC Charter, the January 2021 Al-Ula declaration ending the Qatar blockade, Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute estimates and government statements on the 2026 attacks.
What to watch
Analysts debate whether the GCC can act as a real security alliance or stays a loose club divided by Saudi–Emirati rivalry and different approaches to Iran.

▸US–Israel war with Iran (2026) brought Iranian missiles down on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)Fact
The relationship
Iran aimed most of its retaliation at Gulf monarchies hosting US forces. In the first month an estimated 80% of some 5,200 missiles and drones targeted GCC states: the UAE most, then Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar. Strikes and the blockade halted Qatar's LNG output and dented the Gulf's safe-haven image.
Since when and why
From February 28, 2026, in waves through March and later; Oman, a mediator, was also hit. Gulf states said they intercepted many projectiles with US help.
How we know
Gulf government statements, Saudi and Emirati condemnations, US military data and open-source tallies of launches; the 80% share is an estimate.
What to watch
Whether the war pushes Gulf states closer to the US and Israel or toward hedging and new pacts, such as Saudi Arabia's August 2026 defense deal with Turkey and Pakistan.
▸Saudi Arabia is the dominant member of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)Fact
The relationship
Saudi Arabia has more than half the GCC's people, about half its GDP and most of its military power, and hosts its secretariat in Riyadh. It usually sets the bloc's line on Iran and oil, but smaller members push back: Qatar and Oman run independent diplomacy, and the UAE increasingly competes with Riyadh.
Since when and why
GCC founded in Abu Dhabi in 1981 with its secretariat in Riyadh; the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar (2017–21) ended at the Saudi city of Al-Ula.
How we know
The GCC charter, IMF economic data and the 2021 Al-Ula declaration.
What to watch
Analysts debate how deep the Saudi–Emirati rivalry runs, visible in Yemen, Sudan and oil policy, and whether it could split the bloc.
