Spacetime
1908· Idea
ProvenTested many times; part of working physics.
Space and time combined into one four-dimensional arena, where different observers slice it into "space" and "time" differently.
See it on the Science map →How it works
Every event has a place and a time: four numbers. Observers moving differently disagree about distances and durations separately, but all agree on one combined "spacetime interval" between events. That shared quantity means space and time are two faces of one thing. Minkowski presented this in 1908. In general relativity, spacetime is no longer a fixed stage: mass and energy bend it, and the bending is gravity.
Why it matters
It turned relativity into geometry, the language Einstein then used for gravity. Every modern theory of physics is written in spacetime.
Think of it like
Like a building's floor plan versus a single elevation drawing: each elevation looks different, but all come from one underlying building.
How we know
All predictions of special and general relativity, from particle lifetimes to gravitational waves, are built on spacetime geometry and match experiment.
Still a mystery
Whether spacetime is fundamental or emerges from something deeper, perhaps quantum information, is a major open question in quantum gravity.
Connections (3)
▸Special relativity merged space and time into SpacetimeProven
The relationship
Special relativity shows different observers mix time and space differently, yet all agree on a combined "interval" between events. That makes space and time two directions in one four-dimensional structure. Rotating your viewpoint in spacetime turns some time into space and vice versa.
How the link was found
Hermann Minkowski in 1908, reformulating Einstein's 1905 theory.
Why it's proven
The interval is the same for all observers in every experiment, and the four-dimensional formulation reproduces all special-relativity results.
Open questions and mysteries
Why spacetime has three space dimensions and one time dimension is unknown.
▸Hermann Minkowski formulated SpacetimeProven
The relationship
Minkowski noticed that the formulas of special relativity become simple if time is treated as a fourth dimension with a special sign. He showed that motion is a path through four-dimensional spacetime, and that relativity's effects are just geometry seen from different angles.
How the link was found
Minkowski, lecture "Space and Time," Cologne, 21 September 1908.
Why it's proven
All of relativity can be stated in his geometry, and general relativity was built by letting that geometry curve.
Open questions and mysteries
Whether spacetime is fundamental or emerges from quantum physics is unresolved.
▸Spacetime draws the light cones that define Causality and light conesProven
The relationship
In spacetime, the paths light can take from an event form a cone opening forward in time and another backward. Events inside the cones can be causally connected; events outside cannot. The geometry of spacetime thus sets which events can affect which.
How the link was found
Minkowski introduced light-cone diagrams in 1908.
Why it's proven
Light cones are the basis of all relativistic physics, which matches experiment everywhere tested.
Open questions and mysteries
In curved spacetime, cones tilt; near black holes they point inward. What happens to them in quantum gravity is unknown.
