GameStop, a struggling video-game retailer, was among the most shorted US stocks: short positions exceeded its tradable shares. Traders on the WallStreetBets forum bought shares and call options through commission-free apps. The price rose from about $17 in early January to an intraday $483 on January 28 (before a 2022 split). Losing shorts had to buy back shares, adding fuel. Melvin Capital lost about half its value and took a $2.75 billion rescue. Robinhood briefly blocked purchases when its clearinghouse demanded more collateral.
Why it matters
It showed how social media, options and crowded short bets can collide, and it pushed the SEC to shorten stock settlement to one business day (T+1) in May 2024.
Facts, rules and data
The SEC staff report of October 2021, House Financial Services Committee hearings in February 2021, and Robinhood's and Melvin's disclosures.
Debates and risks
The SEC found short covering was a small share of the buying, so how much was a true squeeze versus a frenzy is debated.

▸Short selling: betting a stock will fall backfired in GameStop meme-stock squeeze (2021)Fact, law or data
The connection
Short sellers borrowed and sold GameStop shares, betting on a fall; their positions exceeded the tradable float. When buyers pushed the price up, shorts faced losses with no limit and bought back shares, pushing it higher still. Heavy call-option buying may have added a 'gamma squeeze', as dealers bought shares to hedge.
When and why
January 2021; Melvin Capital and other funds on the short side, Reddit's WallStreetBets and Keith Gill ('Roaring Kitty') among the buyers.
How we know
The SEC staff report (October 2021) and exchange short-interest data document the positions, price moves and Melvin's losses.
Debates and risks
How short interest topped 100% of the float, through shares lent and resold more than once, and whether lending rules should be tighter, are still argued.
▸GameStop meme-stock squeeze (2021) is a case study for Behavioral finance: how investors really behaveMainstream view
The connection
GameStop displayed behavioral patterns in real time: herding on social media, fear of missing out, overconfidence and a lottery-like taste for cheap options, plus a protest motive against Wall Street. For weeks the price had little to do with the company's earnings, a vivid challenge to efficient-market thinking.
When and why
January 2021, among Robinhood and Reddit users; studied in papers such as Barber, Huang, Odean and Schwarz's 2022 work on attention-driven Robinhood trading.
How solid is the link?
Brokerage data show Robinhood users herding into each day's top-gaining stocks, with poor later returns on average.
Debates and risks
Whether buyers were irrational, making a rational bet on a squeeze, or protesting; motives were mixed and are hard to measure.
▸Market makers, high-speed traders and payment for order flow were thrust into the spotlight by GameStop meme-stock squeeze (2021)Fact, law or data
The connection
During the January 2021 squeeze, wholesalers such as Citadel Securities filled most retail GameStop orders sent by commission-free apps that earn order-flow payments. When Robinhood restricted buying on January 28, many traders blamed market makers and hedge funds, but investigators found the curbs came from clearing-house collateral demands.
When and why
Online brokers and wholesalers, January 2021; a House Financial Services Committee hearing on February 18, 2021.
How we know
The SEC staff report of October 2021 and congressional hearing records.
Debates and risks

▸Clearing houses: DTCC, the Options Clearing Corp. and CME Clearing demanded billions in extra margin during GameStop meme-stock squeeze (2021)Fact, law or data
The connection
On January 28, 2021, DTCC's NSCC raised Robinhood's required deposit to about $3.7 billion, reflecting the risk of unsettled GameStop trades during the two-day settlement window. Robinhood restricted buying, the demand was cut to about $1.4 billion, and it raised $3.4 billion. The episode sped the shift to T+1 settlement.
When and why
New York, January 28, 2021; the NSCC, Robinhood and other retail brokers.
How we know
The SEC staff report of October 2021, Robinhood's congressional testimony and NSCC filings.
