BYD, founded by chemist Wang Chuanfu in Shenzhen in 1995, grew from making phone batteries into the world's biggest seller of electric cars.

What happened

Wang started with about $300,000 borrowed from a cousin, making cheap rechargeable batteries for Motorola and Nokia phones, using hand labor instead of costly robots. In 2003 he bought Qinchuan, a small state-owned carmaker. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway invested $230 million in 2008 and later sold out. With its own battery and chip plants plus Chinese subsidies, BYD has outsold Tesla in plug-in cars since 2022 and in fully electric cars in 2025. Wang became one of China's richest people.

Impact on society and the economy

It showed China could lead a major industry, pushed EV prices down worldwide, and prompted tariffs: 100% in the US (2024) and an extra 17% on BYD in the EU (2024).

How we know

Company filings and monthly sales reports, independent industry sales data, and US and EU tariff rulings that cite Chinese subsidies.

Still debated

How much of BYD's success comes from state support versus its own engineering and cost control is disputed, as is whether its price cuts are sustainable.

Connections (2)

▸Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening made room for private firms like BYD (Wang Chuanfu)Well documented

The connection

Before reform, private businesses were essentially banned. Reform let entrepreneurs like Wang Chuanfu borrow, hire and compete, and Shenzhen, China's first special economic zone, offered suppliers, cheap labor and export links. BYD later gained from state EV subsidies, mixing private enterprise with government industrial policy.

When and how

Shenzhen, from its 1980 zone status to BYD's 1995 founding; national EV subsidies from 2009.

How we know

Company histories and studies of Chinese private enterprise document BYD's start and its use of state support.

Debates

How 'private' Chinese champions really are when they depend on state subsidies, bank loans and party goodwill is debated.

▸BYD (Wang Chuanfu) became the main EV rival of Elon Musk: Tesla and SpaceXWell documented

The connection

Musk laughed off BYD in a 2011 interview, but BYD's cheaper cars and in-house batteries let it pass Tesla in total plug-in sales from 2022 and in fully electric cars in 2025. Tesla still earns more per car, but the price war BYD leads has squeezed Tesla's margins in China and beyond.

When and how

China and world markets, 2011–2025; Tesla's Shanghai factory opened in 2019, putting the two head to head in China.

How we know

Both companies' quarterly sales reports and independent industry data show the shift; Musk's 2011 Bloomberg interview is on video.

Debates

Whether BYD's lead rests on subsidies, cheaper labor or better engineering, and whether tariffs can protect Tesla's home market, is debated.
