Russian Revolution
February and October 1917· Event· Europe
Well documentedSolid records, physical evidence or scientific consensus.
In 1917 two revolutions toppled the Russian tsar and then brought Lenin's Bolsheviks to power, creating the world's first communist state.
See it on the History map →What happened
War losses, food shortages and strikes sparked the February Revolution (March by the Western calendar), and Tsar Nicholas II abdicated. A Provisional Government kept fighting Germany and lost support. In October (November, Western calendar) Lenin's Bolsheviks seized Petrograd in a nearly bloodless coup. They left the war in 1918, took over land and industry, and won a brutal civil war (1918–1921) against the anti-communist 'Whites'. The royal family was executed in July 1918.
Why it matters
It created the first state built on Marxist ideas, inspired communist movements worldwide, and set up the 20th century's long contest between communism and capitalism.
How we know
Eyewitness accounts such as John Reed's Ten Days That Shook the World, Bolshevik and government records, and Soviet archives opened after 1991.
Still debated
Historians debate whether October was a popular revolution or a party coup, and whether Stalin's terror grew naturally out of Lenin's methods.

Connections (5)
▸Marx and the Communist Manifesto inspired Russian RevolutionWell documented
The connection
Marx predicted that workers would overthrow capitalism in advanced industrial countries. Lenin adapted Marxism to mostly rural Russia, arguing that a disciplined party of professional revolutionaries could lead the workers. The Bolsheviks justified their 1917 seizure of power and their 'dictatorship of the proletariat' in Marxist terms.
When and how
Marxism reached Russia in the 1880s; Lenin set out his party model in What Is to Be Done? (1902) and led the Bolshevik faction from 1903.
How we know
Lenin's writings, such as The State and Revolution (1917), cite Marx constantly, and Bolshevik programs and decrees used Marxist language and goals.
Debates and open questions
Whether Lenin applied or distorted Marx is debated; Marx himself expected revolution first in places like Britain or Germany, not Russia.
▸French Revolution was a model for the Russian RevolutionMostly agreed
The connection
Russian revolutionaries studied 1789 closely. The Bolsheviks saw themselves as heirs of the Jacobins, the radical faction that used terror to defend the revolution, and they feared a 'Thermidor', the conservative backlash that toppled Robespierre and later opened the way for Napoleon. Executing a deposed monarch also had a French precedent.
When and how
In Russian revolutionary circles from the 1800s to the 1920s; Lenin and Trotsky both drew French parallels, and Trotsky later called Stalin's rule a 'Soviet Thermidor'.
How sure are we?
Bolshevik speeches and writings repeatedly cite the French Revolution; in 1904 Lenin described a true revolutionary as a 'Jacobin' tied to the working class.
Debates and open questions
How much the French model actually shaped Bolshevik choices, rather than serving as a rhetorical lens, is debated.
▸World War I triggered the Russian RevolutionWell documented
The connection
Russia lost millions of soldiers and vast territory. The war wrecked transport, caused food and fuel shortages, and discredited the tsar, who took personal command in 1915. Bread riots and army mutinies in Petrograd toppled him in February 1917. Lenin's promise of 'peace, land, bread' then helped the Bolsheviks seize power in October.
When and how
Petrograd (St. Petersburg), 1917; Germany let Lenin travel from Switzerland by sealed train in April 1917, hoping he would knock Russia out of the war.
How we know
Russian military and police records, strike reports, German Foreign Office files on aid to Lenin, and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 1918) ending Russia's war.
Debates and open questions
Whether the tsarist regime would have fallen anyway without the war, given the strikes and unrest before 1914, is debated.
▸Russian Revolution created the Soviet UnionWell documented
The connection
After seizing power, the Bolsheviks renamed themselves the Communist Party, banned rival parties and won a civil war against the Whites and foreign interventions. In December 1922 they joined Russia with Ukraine, Belarus and the Transcaucasian republic to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a one-party state.
When and how
Moscow, the capital from 1918; the treaty creating the USSR was signed on December 30, 1922, under Lenin, who died in January 1924.
How we know
The 1922 Treaty on the Creation of the USSR, the 1924 Soviet constitution, and Communist Party congress records.
Debates and open questions
Historians debate whether one-party rule was the Bolsheviks' plan from the start or was hardened by civil war conditions.
▸Russian Revolution overthrew Tsarist Russia and the Russian EmpireWell documented
The connection
World War I brought huge losses, food shortages and inflation. In February 1917 strikes and army mutinies in Petrograd forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate, ending over 300 years of Romanov rule. A Provisional Government kept fighting the war; in October Lenin's Bolsheviks seized power. They killed the former tsar and his family in July 1918.
When and how
Petrograd (St. Petersburg), February and October 1917; Nicholas II, Alexander Kerensky, Lenin and Trotsky. The family was killed at Yekaterinburg.
How we know
Nicholas's abdication manifesto, government records, newspapers and eyewitness memoirs; DNA tests in the 1990s and 2008 identified the family's remains.
Debates and open questions
Historians debate whether the empire could have reformed itself without World War I, and whether October was a popular revolution or a coup.
