The picture

The first troops arrived in October 2024 and fought to push Ukrainian forces out of Russia's Kursk region; Moscow and Pyongyang admitted the deployment only in April 2025. They operate under a June 2024 treaty with a mutual-defense clause. Losses have been heavy: Ukrainian and South Korean estimates put killed and wounded at 6,000–7,000 or more (estimates vary). Engineers and construction workers followed in 2025, and roughly 8,500–11,000 personnel remained in Russia during 2026.
