The picture

Members: the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Canada; the EU also attends. It began as six leaders meeting at Rambouillet, France, in November 1975 after the oil shock; Canada joined in 1976. Russia's membership made it the G8 from 1997 until its suspension over Crimea in 2014. It has no charter or staff; the presidency rotates yearly, and France holds it in 2026. Members produce about 44% of world GDP at market rates but have under 10% of its people.

Why it matters

It sets the Western line on Russia sanctions, the oil price cap and Ukraine financing; friction with Trump, who left the 2025 summit early, tests its unity.

Key facts and numbers

Summit communiqués and leaders' statements since 1975, IMF GDP data, and the 2014 record of Russia's suspension from the G8.

What to watch

Whether a shrinking share of world output and US–Europe rifts leave it able to set global rules, or turn it into a talking shop.

▸G7 (Group of Seven) coordinates Sanctions and financial warfareFact

The relationship

G7 members issue most of the world's reserve currencies and host its main financial centers, so sanctions they agree together are hard to evade. The G7 coordinated the freeze of Russian central-bank assets, a $60 cap on Russian oil prices from December 2022, and a $50 billion Ukraine loan backed by profits on those frozen assets.

Since when and why

G7 finance ministers and leaders from February 2022; the price cap took effect December 5, 2022; the $50 billion loan was agreed at the Apulia summit, June 2024.

How we know

G7 communiqués, US Treasury and EU legal texts, and data on Russian oil export prices and revenue.

What to watch

Debated: the price cap, later lowered by the EU and UK, weakened as Russia's shadow fleet grew, and members disagree on seizing, rather than just freezing, Russia's assets.

▸BRICS and its 2024–25 expansion is often cast as a rival to G7 (Group of Seven)Widely agreed

The relationship

Commentators often pit BRICS against the G7, noting that BRICS members' combined output at purchasing-power parity now exceeds the G7's. But BRICS has no shared values or strategy, and India, Brazil and the UAE stay close to the West. Many analysts see it more as a hedge than a rival bloc.

Since when and why

The comparison spread after O'Neill's 2001 paper; BRICS's PPP share passed the G7's around 2020–23, depending on the data used.

How solid?

IMF World Economic Outlook data; the 'rival' framing is an interpretation, which members such as India explicitly reject.

What to watch

Whether BRICS will ever coordinate like the G7 on sanctions, finance or security; most analysts doubt it, given internal rivalries.

▸Italy is a member of G7 (Group of Seven)Fact

The relationship

Italy is a founding member of the G7, the club of large advanced democracies that coordinates on economics, sanctions and security. It hosted the 2024 summit and uses its seat to press priorities such as migration from Africa and Mediterranean security.

Since when and why

Founding summit at Rambouillet, France, in November 1975; Italy hosted the 2024 summit at Borgo Egnazia in Apulia, chaired by Meloni.

How we know

G7 summit records and communiqués.

What to watch

Whether the G7, now about 44% of world GDP at market rates and less in purchasing-power terms, can still set global rules.
