The picture

A dictatorship in practice; GDP about $75–80 billion, from a largely state-run economy of potash (a key fertilizer), oil refining and machinery. Lukashenko's claimed 2020 re-election sparked the largest protests in the country's history; a harsh crackdown followed, and opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya went into exile. Belarus let Russian troops invade Ukraine from its soil in 2022 and hosts Russian nuclear weapons. Since 2025 it has freed hundreds of political prisoners in exchange for US sanctions relief. Investing: effectively closed to Western investors.

Why it matters

Belarus is Russia's forward base on NATO's border, next to the Suwałki Gap linking the Baltics to Poland, and a test of whether US engagement can loosen Moscow's grip.

Key facts and numbers

Reports by election monitors and the rights group Viasna, which counts political prisoners, US Treasury sanctions actions, and official statements from Minsk and Moscow.

What to watch

Who succeeds Lukashenko, now 72, and whether Belarus drifts away from Moscow or is absorbed further into the Russian-led Union State.

▸Poland is a frontline state facing BelarusFact

The relationship

Poland shares a 418-km border with Belarus and accuses Minsk of 'hybrid war': pushing migrants across since 2021, sending smuggling balloons and hosting Russian forces and nuclear weapons. Poland answered with a steel fence, an electronic barrier, a buffer zone and border closures, including halting truck cargo in July 2026.

Since when and why

The Poland–Belarus border, from summer 2021 to today; full closure during the Russian–Belarusian Zapad exercises in September 2025; truck-freight halt on July 10, 2026.

How we know

Polish border-guard statistics (illegal crossing attempts fell from about 15,500 in the first half of 2025 to 235 in the first half of 2026) and government decisions are public.

What to watch

Disputed: Belarus denies orchestrating migration and calls Poland's measures a blockade. Rights groups criticize Polish pushbacks and the suspension of asylum claims.

▸Belarus is a close ally of RussiaFact

The relationship

Belarus depends on Russia for cheap energy, loans and its biggest market, and Moscow's backing saved Lukashenko during the 2020 protests. In return Belarus let Russian forces attack Ukraine from its soil, hosts Russian nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik missile, and holds joint exercises, though its own army has not joined the fighting.

Since when and why

Union State treaty signed December 1999; Russian troops crossed from Belarus toward Kyiv on February 24, 2022; nuclear weapons deployed from 2023.

How we know

Treaties, satellite imagery of the 2022 troop movements and statements by both leaders; Russia keeps control of the nuclear warheads.

What to watch

How much autonomy Lukashenko keeps, as his prisoner deals with the US suggest, and whether Russia would absorb Belarus after he leaves.

▸Belarus hosts Russian Nuclear weapons and proliferationFact

The relationship

Belarus gave up its Soviet-era warheads in the 1990s. In 2023 Russia moved tactical nuclear weapons there, its first such deployment outside its borders since the Soviet breakup. Moscow keeps control of the warheads, which Belarusian aircraft and Iskander missiles can carry, and a December 2024 treaty extended Russia's nuclear guarantee to Belarus.

Since when and why

Announced by Putin in March 2023; Lukashenko said deliveries began in June 2023; the Union State security treaty was signed in Minsk in December 2024.

How we know

Putin's and Lukashenko's statements and satellite imagery of storage sites; outside analysts have not confirmed how many warheads are there.

What to watch

How many weapons are there and what Belarus's role in using them would be; NATO neighbors Poland and Lithuania see the move as a direct threat.
