The picture

Founded in Bangkok in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to keep the peace during the Cold War, it grew to include Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and, in October 2025, Timor-Leste. Combined GDP is nearly $4 trillion. It runs a free-trade area, anchors the RCEP trade pact with China, Japan and Korea, and hosts the East Asia Summit. Decisions need consensus, and members do not interfere in each other's affairs. The chair rotates yearly; the Philippines holds it in 2026.

Why it matters

It is where the US, China, Japan and India court Southeast Asia, but its consensus rule leaves it slow on Myanmar and the South China Sea.

Think of it like

Like a condo association where every owner holds a veto: good for keeping the peace, bad for tough decisions.

Key facts and numbers

The 1967 Bangkok Declaration, the 2007 ASEAN Charter, summit communiqués and ASEAN Secretariat trade and investment statistics. As of 2026.

What to watch

Debated: whether 'ASEAN centrality' still means much as members split, with Cambodia and Laos close to Beijing and the Philippines close to Washington.

▸Myanmar civil war defied the peace plan of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)Fact

The relationship

Two months after the coup, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing agreed to ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus: end violence, hold dialogue, allow aid, accept an envoy. The army ignored it, so ASEAN barred junta leaders from summits, and Myanmar's 2026 chair went to the Philippines. In January 2026 ASEAN said it had no consensus to recognize the army-run election.

Since when and why

Jakarta, April 24, 2021; leaders excluded from October 2021; ASEAN foreign ministers' retreat in Cebu, January 29, 2026.

How we know

ASEAN chair's statements and communiqués, and statements by Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro.

What to watch

Whether ASEAN will deal with Min Aung Hlaing now that he is president; members are split between engagement and isolation.

▸ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) hosts code-of-conduct talks on South China Sea disputesFact

The relationship

ASEAN and China signed a non-binding Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in 2002 and have negotiated a code of conduct since 2013, aiming to finish by 2026 under the Philippine chair. Consensus rules let members close to Beijing water down statements; in 2012 ASEAN failed to issue a communiqué over the issue.

Since when and why

Phnom Penh, 2002 and 2012; talks across ASEAN capitals since 2013; Philippine chairmanship, 2026.

How we know

The 2002 declaration, ASEAN–China joint statements setting the 2026 target, and summit communiqués.

What to watch

Whether the code will be legally binding, cover the disputed areas or constrain China at all; claimants and China disagree on all three.

▸ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is a top beneficiary of Supply-chain shift: friend-shoring and 'China+1'Widely agreed

The relationship

As firms hedge against US–China tension and tariffs, Southeast Asia has drawn new factories: Vietnam for electronics, Malaysia for chip testing and packaging, Thailand for EVs and hard drives, Indonesia for battery materials. ASEAN attracts over $200 billion of foreign direct investment a year, a growing share from Chinese firms themselves.

Since when and why

Accelerated after the 2018 US–China trade war and again with 2025 US tariffs; hubs include northern Vietnam, Penang in Malaysia and Thailand's Eastern Seaboard.

How solid?

ASEAN Investment Reports and UNCTAD data, US import data showing Southeast Asia's rising share, and company relocation announcements.

What to watch

Debated: how much is genuinely new production versus Chinese goods rerouted to dodge tariffs; US tariffs on transshipped goods target the latter.
