GDP about $17 billion. The Islamic Emirate has no constitution or elections; supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada rules by decree from Kandahar. Girls are barred from school beyond sixth grade and women from most jobs. Strengths: a ban that slashed opium-poppy farming (by about 95% in 2023, per the UN), untapped copper and lithium. Weaknesses: aid cuts, drought, a deadly 2025 earthquake, and millions of refugees forced back from Iran and Pakistan. Rival: Pakistan; partners: Russia, China, Qatar, and India since 2025. Investing: none; sanctions apply.
Why it matters
A Taliban state bordering Pakistan, Iran, China and Central Asia shapes terrorism risks, refugee flows and the new Pakistan–Afghanistan war.
Key facts and numbers
UN agencies (UNAMA, UNODC, UNHCR), World Bank estimates and Taliban decrees; independent reporting is restricted and data are thin. As of 2026.
What to watch
Outlook: whether more countries follow Russia's recognition, and whether hardliners in Kandahar or pragmatists in Kabul prevail on women's rights and militants.

▸Pakistan–Afghanistan border war pits Pakistan against Afghanistan under the TalibanFact
The relationship
The war sets Pakistan against the Taliban it once sheltered and backed. At issue are TTP militants based in Afghanistan and the 2,600 km Durand Line, a colonial-era border no Afghan government, the Taliban included, has accepted. Pakistan has shut crossings such as Torkham and pushed out hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees.
Since when and why
Along the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan borders since October 2025; mediation by Qatar and Turkey (October 2025) and China (Urumqi, April 2026).
How we know
UN reports on civilian casualties and displacement, official statements, and border-closure and trade data.
What to watch
Whether the Durand Line dispute can ever be settled, and whether Pakistan's pressure weakens Taliban rule or rallies Afghans behind it.
▸Afghanistan under the Taliban was first recognized by RussiaFact
The relationship
Russia became the first country to formally recognize the Taliban government, accepting its ambassador. Moscow wants Taliban help against Islamic State–Khorasan, which killed about 145 people at a Moscow concert hall in 2024, plus trade routes and influence in Central Asia. China and others host Taliban envoys without formal recognition.
Since when and why
Russia lifted its terrorist designation of the Taliban in April 2025 and announced recognition on July 3, 2025.
How we know
Statements by Russia's Foreign Ministry and the Taliban; the UN has still not seated the Taliban government.
What to watch
Whether recognition buys Moscow real leverage over Taliban policy, and whether the Taliban can or will curb Islamic State–Khorasan.
