What happened

After the October 1917 revolution, opponents of the Bolsheviks, from monarchists to moderate socialists, formed 'White' armies on Russia's edges. Britain, France, the US, Japan and others sent troops. Leon Trotsky built the Red Army, about 5 million strong by 1920, and the Reds held the central railways and big cities. The Whites were divided and far apart. The Reds had won by 1921, though fighting went on in places. Deaths from combat, terror, famine and disease are estimated at 7 to 12 million.

Why it matters

It produced the Soviet Union (1922), with its one-party state, secret police and state-run economy, which shaped the rest of the century and the Cold War.

How we know

Soviet and White archives, opened more fully after 1991, foreign intervention records, memoirs, and population data showing the scale of famine and loss.

Still debated

Why the Whites lost is debated: disunity, no appealing land policy, dependence on foreigners or Red ruthlessness. Death tolls also vary widely by source.

Connections (2)

▸Russian Revolutions of 1917 led to Russian Civil WarWell documented

The connection

The October seizure of power, the closing of the elected Constituent Assembly in January 1918, and the harsh Brest-Litovsk peace convinced many Russians the Bolsheviks had to be fought. Officers, liberals, rival socialists and minority nations rose against them, and foreign powers intervened. Lenin's regime answered with the Red Army and the Cheka secret police.

When and how

Across the former Russian Empire from late 1917; the Constituent Assembly was dispersed in Petrograd on January 19, 1918.

How we know

Bolshevik decrees, White leaders' memoirs and foreign intervention records trace the war directly to the October seizure and its aftermath.

Debates and open questions

Whether civil war was inevitable, or the Bolsheviks' refusal to share power provoked it, is debated.

▸Russian Civil War established the Soviet state that waged the Cold WarWell documented

The connection

Victory in the civil war let Lenin's Bolsheviks found the Soviet Union in 1922 as a one-party state committed to world revolution. Western powers had sent troops to aid the Whites, including Americans at Arkhangelsk and Vladivostok, leaving a mutual distrust that resurfaced when the two sides became rival superpowers after 1945.

When and how

Former Russian Empire, 1917–22; Allied intervention by Britain, France, the US, Japan and others, 1918–20; USSR founded December 1922.

How we know

The Soviet state, ideology and institutions link the two directly, and Soviet leaders repeatedly cited the Allied intervention as early proof of Western hostility.

Debates and open questions

Whether the Cold War grew mainly from ideology rooted in 1917–22, or from postwar power politics over Europe, is a central debate.
