What happened

Peter Thiel, Alex Karp and three others founded it in 2003, naming it after the seeing-stones in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The CIA's venture arm, In-Q-Tel, was an early investor. Its Gotham software merges intelligence data so analysts can map networks; US forces used it against roadside-bomb cells in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2016 it sued the Army for favoring in-house software, and won. It now runs the Pentagon's Maven Smart System and holds a 2025 Army deal worth up to $10 billion.

Why it matters

It marks a shift in defense spending from hardware to software, and made a Silicon Valley firm one of the Pentagon's key suppliers.

How we know

Company SEC filings since its 2020 stock listing, Pentagon contract announcements, the 2016 Court of Federal Claims ruling, and press reporting on its work for militaries and intelligence agencies.

Still debated

Critics question its work for US immigration enforcement and Israel's military, and the Pentagon's growing reliance on one firm; how much its software improves outcomes is hard to measure.

Connections (3)

▸Palantir Technologies sells data and AI targeting software for AI and data-driven warfareWell documented

The connection

Palantir's software pulls together satellite images, drone video, radar and intercepted signals, then uses AI to flag likely targets and suggest weapons. It is used by the US military, NATO, Ukraine and Israel, making the company a main supplier of the data layer behind modern targeting.

When and how

Worldwide since the 2000s; in Ukraine from 2022, in a partnership with Israel's Defense Ministry from January 2024, and in the 2026 Iran war.

How we know

Contracts and partnership announcements, statements by CEO Alex Karp and Ukrainian officials, and US commanders' descriptions of Maven.

Debates and open questions

Critics fear private software firms gain too much influence over life-and-death decisions; how much its tools change outcomes is hard to verify.

▸Palantir Technologies became a lead contractor for Project Maven (Pentagon AI targeting)Well documented

The connection

When Google quit Maven in 2018 after employee protests, Palantir, which openly welcomed military work, took over a large part. Its Maven Smart System became the program's main platform: a $480 million contract from May 2024 had its ceiling raised to nearly $1.3 billion in 2025. NATO bought a version too.

When and how

Pentagon work from about 2019; NATO acquired Maven Smart System NATO in March 2025.

How we know

Defense Department contract announcements and NATO's acquisition statement; Palantir's early role was reported by journalists before being confirmed.

Debates and open questions

How much of Maven's capability comes from Palantir versus other contractors and government code is not public.

▸Anduril Industries partnered (2024) on defense AI with Palantir TechnologiesWell documented

The connection

Several Anduril founders came from Palantir, both firms have backing from Peter Thiel's circle, and both took their names from Tolkien. In December 2024 they announced a partnership linking Anduril's Lattice with Palantir's AI platforms to handle battlefield data, and they explored joint bids with other tech firms.

When and how

Announced December 2024, as both firms competed for larger shares of the Pentagon's software and drone budgets.

How we know

Joint company announcements, and Financial Times reporting on talks with other tech firms about bidding together for Pentagon work.

Debates and open questions

Whether a tight circle of Silicon Valley investors gaining big defense roles brings needed innovation or concentrated influence is debated.
