See it on the Battles & Wars map →What happened
Jalal al-Din, son of the fleeing Khwarazmian shah, rallied an army in Afghanistan and beat a Mongol force at Parwan in 1221. Genghis Khan pursued him at speed and caught him with his back to the Indus River, in today's Pakistan. The Mongols broke his army. According to the chronicles, Jalal al-Din rode his horse off a high bank into the river and swam across, and Genghis held him up to his sons as a model of courage.
Why it matters
It ended organized Khwarazmian resistance and brought the Mongols to the edge of India. They did not invade then, and later Mongol raids were repeatedly turned back by the Delhi Sultanate.
How we know
Juvaini, Juzjani and Rashid al-Din, plus Nasawi, Jalal al-Din's own secretary, who wrote his biography. The exact battlefield has not been located.
Still debated
The site and army sizes are unknown, and the famous leap may be embellished. Why Genghis turned back from India, whether heat, omens or politics, is debated.

The connection
After Shah Muhammad II died in flight, his son Jalal al-Din kept fighting from Afghanistan and beat a Mongol army at Parwan. Genghis Khan pursued him to the Indus, where the last Khwarazmian field army was destroyed, effectively ending the campaign.
When and how
Parwan, Afghanistan, 1221; Indus River, in today's Pakistan, November 1221.
How we know
Persian chroniclers and Jalal al-Din's secretary Nasawi describe the sequence from Parwan to the Indus.
Debates and open questions
The exact site and date are uncertain. Jalal al-Din kept fighting in Iran and the Caucasus until 1231, so the war's 'end' is relative.
▸Genghis Khan personally defeated Jalal al-Din at Battle of the IndusWell documented
The connection
Angered by the defeat at Parwan, Genghis Khan led the pursuit himself, marching day and night to catch Jalal al-Din before he could cross the Indus. He commanded the attack that broke the Khwarazmian army, and is said to have stopped his archers from shooting the prince as he swam away.
When and how
Banks of the Indus River, November 1221; Genghis Khan against Jalal al-Din Mingburnu.
How we know
Juvaini and other Persian sources, writing within a few decades, describe Genghis's personal command; the river escape appears in several accounts.
Debates and open questions
The admiring words Genghis reportedly spoke about Jalal al-Din may be literary embellishment by later chroniclers.
