Clothing and the eyed needle

eyed needles c. 45,000 years ago; clothing earlier· Invention or discovery· Tools, energy & materials

Mostly agreedGood evidence; some details, dates or numbers uncertain.

Fitted clothing, sewn with the bone eyed needle, let people survive and spread through ice-age cold.

How it works

The first clothing was probably draped hides, scraped clean with stone tools. DNA from body lice, which live only in clothing, suggests people wore clothes by at least 83,000 and possibly 170,000 years ago. Bone needles with eyes appear by about 45,000 years ago at Denisova Cave in Siberia, then across Eurasia. An eye pulls the thread through in one motion, allowing close-fitting, layered garments. Such clothing helped people settle the far north and cross into the Americas.

Why it mattered

Warm, tailored clothes opened cold regions to settlement and started textile work, which later became one of the world's largest industries.

How we know

Bone needles from Denisova Cave and many European sites; DNA timing of when clothing lice split from head lice; hide-scraping wear on stone tools.

Still unknown or debated

Clothes rarely survive, so when people first wore them, and whether Neanderthals tailored garments or only draped hides, remains uncertain.

Connections (2)

▸Stone tools made possible Clothing and the eyed needleMostly agreed

The connection

Stone scrapers cleaned hides, stone blades cut them to shape, and stone awls punched holes for lacing. Bone needles themselves were cut and ground with stone tools, and a sharp flint drilled the eye. Without stone tools, there would have been no tailored clothing.

When and how

Hide-scraping tools across Africa and Eurasia over hundreds of thousands of years; eyed needles by about 45,000 years ago in Siberia.

How sure are we?

Microscopic wear on stone scrapers matches hide working, and grooves on bone needles show stone cutting and drilling.

Debates and open questions

Since hides rarely survive, when people began sewing rather than simply draping skins is uncertain.

▸Clothing and the eyed needle created the demand for cloth later met by Textile machines (jenny, water frame, mule, power loom)Well documented

The connection

The eyed needle let people sew fitted clothing, first from hides and later from woven cloth. Making that cloth by hand, spinning thread above all, stayed one of the most time-consuming household jobs for millennia. Textile machines finally mechanized it, starting with cotton in 1760s Britain.

When and how

Eyed needles appear about 45,000 years ago, in Siberia and elsewhere; textile machines arrived in Lancashire and Derbyshire, England, in the 1760s–1780s.

How we know

This is a long-range link of need, not a direct line of invention; it rests on finds of needles and textiles and records of hand-spinning labor.

Debates and open questions

When people first spun and wove fibers is uncertain; flax fibers about 30,000 years old from Dzudzuana Cave in Georgia hint at very early thread-making.
