Karl Schwarzschild
1916· Person
ProvenTested many times; part of working physics.
German astronomer (1873–1916), director of the Potsdam observatory, who found the first exact solution of Einstein's gravity equations.
See it on the Science map →How it works
In late 1915, while serving as an artillery officer on the Russian front, Schwarzschild read Einstein's new general relativity and within weeks solved its equations for the space around a single round, non-spinning mass. He mailed the result to Einstein, who was surprised an exact answer existed. The solution hid a special radius where the math misbehaved. Schwarzschild treated it as a curiosity. He died in May 1916 of an illness caught at the front.
Why it matters
His solution is still the standard description of space around stars, planets and non-spinning black holes, and its special radius became the event horizon.
How the work held up
His formula underlies the bending of starlight (seen in 1919), Mercury's orbit shift, GPS clock corrections, and the black-hole shadow sizes photographed in 2019 and 2022.
Still a mystery
He, and Einstein, did not believe nature would ever squeeze matter inside that radius. That question stayed open until the 1960s.

▸Karl Schwarzschild found the first solution for Black holesProven
The relationship
Schwarzschild solved Einstein's equations for the space around a single round mass. His solution describes ordinary stars from outside, but if the mass is squeezed small enough, it describes a region light cannot leave. Every non-spinning, uncharged black hole is described by his solution, though it took decades for physicists to accept what it implied.
How the link was found
Karl Schwarzschild, December 1915, while serving in the German army; published in early 1916. The black hole reading came later, from Lemaître (1933), Oppenheimer and Snyder (1939), and Finkelstein (1958).
Why it's proven
The solution is mathematically exact and matches observation: planetary orbits, light bending, and the shadow sizes of black holes imaged in 2019 and 2022.
Open questions and mysteries
Real black holes spin, so they follow Kerr's 1963 solution instead. What lies at the center of either is unknown.
▸Karl Schwarzschild found the radius of Event horizon: the point of no returnProven
The relationship
Schwarzschild's solution contains a special radius, now called the Schwarzschild radius, proportional to mass. For the Sun it is about 3 km; for Earth, about 9 mm. If an object is squeezed inside this radius, the radius becomes an event horizon. Schwarzschild thought it unphysical. Decades later, it was understood as the real boundary of no return.
How the link was found
Karl Schwarzschild, 1916. Georges Lemaître showed in 1933 that the apparent breakdown there is a coordinate artifact; Finkelstein (1958) showed it is a one-way surface.
Why it's proven
The Event Horizon Telescope's measured shadow sizes for M87* and Sagittarius A* match the predicted horizon size given each black hole's independently measured mass.
Open questions and mysteries
For spinning black holes the horizon is smaller and more complex; how quantum effects alter it is open.
