Length contraction

1905· Idea

ProvenTested many times; part of working physics.

An object moving fast is measured to be shorter along its direction of motion than when it is at rest.

See it on the Science map →

How it works

If time stretches for a moving object, distance must shrink to keep the speed of light the same for everyone. A spaceship at 87% of light speed would be measured at half its length by someone it passes. Only the length along the motion shrinks, not the width. The crew notice nothing; to them, it is the outside world that is squeezed.

Why it matters

It is the twin of time dilation, and it explained the 1887 Michelson-Morley null result before Einstein showed why it happens.

How we know

Indirect but strong. Muons reach the ground because, in their view, the atmosphere is contracted. Gold nuclei in colliders behave like flattened pancakes. In 1959 Terrell and Penrose showed a photo would show rotation, not squashing.

Still a mystery

It is settled theory. Direct pictures are hard because light from different parts of the object reaches a camera at different times.

Connections (2)

▸Special relativity predicts Length contractionProven

The relationship

If a moving clock runs slow but everyone agrees on the relative speed, then distances must also differ. An object moving past you is measured shorter along its motion by exactly the factor that its clocks run slow. The two effects are two sides of the same rules.

How the link was found

FitzGerald (1889) and Lorentz (1892) proposed it ad hoc; Einstein derived it from first principles in 1905.

Why it's proven

It is required for consistency with tested time dilation, and appears in collider physics where fast nuclei behave as flattened disks.

Open questions and mysteries

Settled physics; direct visual demonstrations remain technically challenging.

▸Michelson–Morley: no "ether wind" was first explained with Length contractionProven

The relationship

To rescue the ether after the 1887 null result, FitzGerald and Lorentz proposed that anything moving through the ether shrinks along its motion by exactly enough to hide the ether wind. It was a patch with no deeper reason. Einstein later derived the same shrinking from relativity's two rules, with no ether needed.

How the link was found

George FitzGerald suggested it in 1889; Hendrik Lorentz independently in 1892. Einstein gave the modern explanation in 1905.

Why it's proven

Contraction alone could not explain every variant; the 1932 Kennedy-Thorndike experiment also required time dilation, which relativity supplies. Relativity's full package matches all such tests.

Open questions and mysteries

Settled. It is a classic example of the right formula appearing before the right explanation.
