See it on the World Religions map →What it is
The fourth Guru, Ram Das, dug the pool (sarovar) that gave Amritsar ('pool of nectar') its name, and the fifth, Arjan, built the temple around 1588, with doors on all four sides to welcome everyone. In 1604 Arjan installed the Adi Granth inside. Afghan forces destroyed it in the 1760s; Sikhs rebuilt it, and Maharaja Ranjit Singh covered it in gilded copper in the early 1800s. Its langar serves free meals to tens of thousands of people a day.
Why it matters
It is the spiritual center of Sikh life. In 1984 Operation Blue Star, an Indian Army assault on armed militants inside, killed many pilgrims too and led to Indira Gandhi's assassination and deadly anti-Sikh riots.
Sources and history
Sikh chronicles and Mughal and Afghan-era records; Ranjit Singh's inscriptions on the building; travelers' accounts; and government and independent reports on the 1984 events.
Questions and debates
Tradition says the Muslim Sufi Mian Mir laid the foundation stone, but early sources do not confirm it. Death tolls from 1984 are still disputed.
Connections (2)
▸Guru Granth Sahib was installed in Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib)Historical record
The connection
Guru Arjan installed the newly compiled Adi Granth in the Harmandir Sahib in 1604, naming the elder Baba Buddha its first custodian (granthi). The scripture is still carried in procession into the shrine before dawn each day and back to rest at night, while continuous singing of its hymns (kirtan) fills the temple.
When and where
Amritsar, Punjab, 1604; Guru Arjan and Baba Buddha.
Historical evidence
Sikh chronicles record the installation; the daily rites have continued for centuries; travelers' accounts describe the hymn-singing.
Questions and debates
The scripture's exact form before 1604, and disputes over custody of the earliest manuscripts, remain debated by scholars.
▸Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest shrine of SikhismHistorical record
The connection
Harmandir Sahib is the spiritual center of the Sikh world, and the adjoining Akal Takht ('throne of the timeless'), founded by the sixth Guru in 1606, is its highest seat of community authority. Sikhs aim to visit, bathe in the sacred pool and eat at its langar, and the shrine's fate in 1984 shaped modern Sikh politics.
When and where
Amritsar, Punjab, from c. 1588 to today; Gurus Ram Das, Arjan and Hargobind; managed by the elected Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee under a 1925 law.
Historical evidence
Sikh chronicles, the continuous history of pilgrimage, and the shrine's central role in events like 1984's Operation Blue Star.
Questions and debates
Debate continues over 1984: how many died, whether the government's assault was necessary, and the political grievances it left behind.
