Historical materialism and class struggle
1846 onward· Idea or argument· Politics, society & justice
Mostly agreedGood evidence; some details uncertain.
Marx's theory that how a society produces its material needs shapes its laws, politics and ideas, and that class conflict drives history.
See it on the Philosophy map →The idea
The idea: 'It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but their social being that determines their consciousness.' The economic 'base' (tools, land, who owns what) shapes the 'superstructure' (law, religion, politics). Marx's example: medieval lords' power rested on serf-worked land; as trade and factories grew, merchants and industrialists gained power and rewrote laws, as in the French Revolution. History, he held, moves through slavery, feudalism and capitalism toward socialism. Main objection: Max Weber argued ideas, like Protestantism, also drive economic change.
Why it matters
It made economic interests and class central to how historians and social scientists explain events, even among many who reject Marx's politics.
Where it comes from
Sketched in The German Ideology (1845–46, published only in 1932) and stated classically in the 1859 Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy.
Still debated
Whether it is a testable scientific theory or a flexible framework; Popper called it unfalsifiable, while analytical Marxists like G. A. Cohen tried to make it rigorous.
Connections (4)
▸Hegel's dialectic and the Phenomenology of Spirit was inverted into Historical materialism and class struggleWell documented
The connection
Marx kept Hegel's picture of history advancing through contradictions toward freedom but replaced the driver: not ideas or Spirit but material production and class conflict. Capitalism's contradiction, socially organized production under private ownership, would produce its successor. Ludwig Feuerbach's materialism (1841) was the bridge.
When and how
Brussels, 1845–46, in Marx's Theses on Feuerbach and The German Ideology, written with Engels.
How we know
Marx's 1873 afterword to Capital and Engels's Ludwig Feuerbach (1886) describe the inversion explicitly.
Debates and open questions
How much dialectic survives in the mature Marx; he never used 'dialectical materialism,' a later term that became Soviet doctrine, and some Marxists drop dialectic altogether.
▸Karl Marx developed Historical materialism and class struggleWell documented
The connection
Marx, working with Engels, made it the backbone of his thought: how people organize production, and who owns the land, tools and factories, shapes law, politics and ideas. He used it to argue that capitalism, like feudalism before it, was a passing stage.
When and how
Brussels, 1845–46, in The German Ideology, which they left 'to the gnawing criticism of the mice'; classic summary published in Berlin in 1859.
How we know
The 1859 Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy; at Marx's 1883 funeral, Engels credited him with discovering 'the law of development of human history.'
Debates and open questions
How much is Engels's work, and whether Marx meant strict economic determinism; Engels's 1890 letters insisted economics decides only 'in the last instance.'
▸The Communist Manifesto popularized Historical materialism and class struggleWell documented
The connection
Its first section compresses the theory into a few pages: 'freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guild-master and journeyman' locked in class struggle, now simplified into bourgeois versus proletarian. Because The German Ideology stayed unpublished until 1932, the Manifesto was for decades how most readers met the theory.
When and how
First published in London, 1848; revived by German reprints from 1872 and translations into Russian, English and dozens of other languages.
How we know
Its publication history, as one of the most printed political texts ever, and Engels's prefaces presenting it as the theory's popular statement.
Debates and open questions
Whether its tidy two-class story oversimplifies; Engels added an 1888 note limiting 'all history' to written history, since he thought early societies lacked classes.
▸Historical materialism and class struggle was accused of dodging refutation by Karl Popper and falsifiabilityWell documented
The connection
Popper said Marx's theory began as real science, making testable predictions such as revolution in the most industrial countries. When those failed, followers reinterpreted the theory and the evidence to fit, making it unfalsifiable. For Popper a theory that explains everything explains nothing; he also attacked 'historicism', the belief in inevitable laws of history.
When and how
Popper wrote The Poverty of Historicism and The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945) in New Zealand during World War II; a 1953 Cambridge lecture sharpened the charge.
How we know
The charge is explicit in these texts and in Conjectures and Refutations (1963), which reprints the lecture.
Debates and open questions
Marxists reply that Popper attacked a crude version of Marx, and that adjusting theories to new evidence is normal in every science, as Imre Lakatos argued.
