Whole life insurance

· Insurance type

Depends on youExperts differ; the right answer depends on your situation.

Permanent life insurance with fixed premiums for life, a guaranteed death benefit, and a cash value that grows slowly.

See it on the Personal Finance & Estate map →

How it works

Part of each premium builds cash value at a guaranteed rate, plus dividends from mutual insurers that aren't guaranteed. The cash value grows tax-deferred and can be borrowed against; the death benefit is income-tax-free. Premiums often run 10 or more times term's for the same coverage. Who it's for: lifelong needs, like estate liquidity or a special-needs child. Main traps: high first-year commissions, little cash value if you surrender early, and sales pitches like 'be your own bank'.

Why it matters for you

Depends on you; experts differ. It suits true lifelong needs and very conservative savers; for most others, term plus investing costs less. Have a fee-only advisor review the illustration.

Think of it like

Like buying instead of leasing: higher payments and slow equity, and selling in the first years loses heavily to costs.

Rules, limits and sources (2026)

Insurer illustrations and state-approved policy forms; IRC Sec. 7702 defines life insurance and Sec. 7702A sets overfunding limits (modified endowment contracts); Consumer Federation of America research.

Watch out for

Long-run returns depend on dividend scales insurers can change, so how whole life compares with bonds over decades is debated.

Connections (2)

▸Whole life insurance is a permanent, cash-value form of Life insuranceStandard practice

How they connect

Whole life is the traditional permanent version: fixed premiums for life, a guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash-value growth, plus possible dividends from mutual insurers. It costs many times more than term for the same coverage, because it is built to pay out eventually and doubles as a conservative savings account.

When it applies

The dominant permanent policy since the 19th century, sold by mutual insurers such as New York Life and Northwestern Mutual; still widely sold by agents.

How sure?

Policy contracts and state nonforfeiture laws guarantee minimum cash values; IRC Sec. 7702 sets the tests that keep it taxed as life insurance.

Watch out for

Whether its guarantees justify high premiums and agent commissions, often 50–100% of first-year premium, is a long-running debate among planners.

▸Whole life insurance costs far more than Term life insuranceStandard practice

How they connect

Both pay a death benefit, but whole life also funds coverage for life and a savings component, so the same $1 million can cost 10 or more times as much (estimates vary). Term covers the years when the need is biggest; whole life covers needs that never end. Many term policies convert to whole life without new health questions.

When it applies

Whole life dominated US sales through the 1970s; cheaper term and the 'buy term and invest the difference' pitch gained ground from the late 1970s.

How sure?

Side-by-side insurer quotes and illustrations; state insurance regulators' buyer's guides explain the cost difference.

Watch out for

Whether 'buy term and invest the difference' really beats whole life depends on discipline, taxes and returns; studies and salespeople disagree.
