Romance & crypto 'pig-butchering' scams
· Concept or strategy
Watch outA common mistake, trap or scam.
Long cons that build an online friendship or romance, then steer the victim into a fake crypto platform and drain their savings.
See it on the Personal Finance & Estate map →How it works
Contact starts on a dating app, social media or a 'wrong number' text. Over weeks the scammer becomes a confidant, then shares a 'sure' crypto or gold trade on a polished site showing fake gains. Victims add more, sometimes cashing out IRAs or borrowing against a home; withdrawals are blocked by invented 'taxes' or fees, then the person vanishes. Many operations run from Southeast Asian compounds staffed partly by trafficked workers. 'Recovery' firms promising refunds are often the same criminals.
Why it matters for you
Investment scams, mostly crypto, were the costliest fraud category the FBI tracked in 2024, and losses often wipe out retirement savings that cannot be rebuilt.
Think of it like
Like a broker who spends months earning a client's trust, then sells them a building that does not exist.
Red flags and protection
FBI IC3 counted about $6.5 billion in investment-fraud losses in 2024; UN officials (2023) estimated over 200,000 people held in scam compounds in Myanmar and Cambodia; US prosecutors sought a record $15 billion bitcoin forfeiture in 2025.
Watch out for
How many victims never report, and how much seized crypto will ever be returned to them, remain open questions.
Connections (2)
▸Romance & crypto 'pig-butchering' scams are a fast-growing form of Financial scams & fraud (incl. affinity & Ponzi schemes)Watch out
How they connect
Pig-butchering, named for a Chinese phrase about fattening a pig before slaughter, blends two old cons, the romance scam and the fake investment, with crypto as the payment rail. Because transfers are fast, global and hard to reverse, losses per victim run far higher than for most consumer frauds and can reach six or seven figures.
When it applies
Emerged in China around 2016–2019, then moved to compounds in Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos during COVID, targeting victims worldwide, including many Americans.
How sure?
FBI IC3 data show investment fraud, mostly crypto, as the largest loss category in 2023 and 2024; UN and US Treasury reports trace the compounds.
Watch out for
How much of the money flows to large organized-crime groups versus smaller crews, and whether 2025 crackdowns slowed them, is unclear.
▸Romance & crypto 'pig-butchering' scams often drain savings from Individual Retirement Account (traditional IRA)Watch out
How they connect
Victims who run out of cash often turn to retirement accounts. An IRA withdrawal is taxed as income, plus a 10% penalty before 59½, even though the money was stolen. A 2025 IRS memo said some profit-motivated scam losses may be deductible as theft losses; pure romance losses generally are not. Ask a CPA.
When it applies
Typically weeks into the scam, when 'profits' look real; custodians may see repeated large IRA distributions headed to crypto exchanges or overseas wires.
How sure?
IRS Chief Counsel Advice 202511015 (March 2025) analyzed five scam types; FBI and FINRA alerts describe victims liquidating retirement accounts.
Watch out for
How the IRS and courts will apply the theft-loss analysis to specific cases, and how much retirement money is lost overall, remain open.
