Euro-area government bonds: German Bunds are the safe benchmark, while French and Italian bonds pay extra for more risk.

How it works

Each euro country issues its own debt in the shared currency: Germany Bunds, France OATs, Italy BTPs, Spain Bonos. Because no single government controls the euro's printing press, investors demand a 'spread' over Bunds for weaker finances. Germany's debt is about 63% of GDP, France's about 115%, Italy's about 135%. The ECB's bond buying and its 2022 Transmission Protection Instrument aim to stop panics. In 2025, after French governments fell, France's 10-year yield briefly matched or exceeded Italy's.

Why it matters

Bund yields set borrowing costs across Europe, and spreads are the euro area's stress gauge: a wide spread signals fear about a country's debts or the euro itself.

Facts, rules and data

National treasury and Eurostat debt data, ECB statements on asset purchases and the TPI, and daily yields reported by Bloomberg, Reuters, ANSA and Il Sole 24 Ore.

Debates and risks

Whether France's rising debt becomes the next euro crisis, and whether the ECB would buy French bonds under its TPI rules if spreads blew out.

Connections (2)

▸Deutsche Börse: the Frankfurt exchange and the DAX hosts the Bund futures that price European government bonds: German Bunds, French OATs, Italian BTPsFact, law or data

The connection

Eurex lists futures on German government bonds: the Bund (10-year), Bobl (5-year) and Schatz (2-year). Traders use them to hedge or bet on rates, so prices often move there first, before the cash bonds. Eurex won the Bund contract from London's LIFFE in 1997–98, when electronic trading proved cheaper than the open-outcry pit.

When and why

Frankfurt and London, the 1997–98 'Battle of the Bund'; Bund futures had started at LIFFE in 1988.

How we know

Exchange volume records and histories of the shift; academic studies find Bund price discovery happens mainly in the futures.

Debates and risks

Whether French and Italian bond futures on Eurex can become benchmarks, and whether joint EU bonds might one day rival the Bund.

▸European government bonds: German Bunds, French OATs, Italian BTPs split apart in yields during European debt crisis (2010–12)Fact, law or data

The connection

Before 2008 investors treated euro government bonds as nearly equal. When Greece revealed hidden deficits, spreads exploded: Greek 10-year yields topped 30% in 2012, and Italy paid more than 5 percentage points over Bunds in November 2011. ECB President Mario Draghi's July 2012 pledge to do 'whatever it takes' calmed markets.

When and why

Athens, Rome, Madrid and Frankfurt, 2010–12; Draghi spoke in London on July 26, 2012.

How we know

Bond yield histories from the ECB and Bloomberg, and records of Greece's 2012 debt swap.

Debates and risks

Whether the ECB can hold down spreads without political backing for joint EU bonds.
