How it works

The SEC rejected spot bitcoin ETFs for a decade, citing manipulation risk, until a federal appeals court sided with Grayscale in August 2023. On January 10, 2024 it approved 11 at once. Most charge about 0.2–0.25% a year; Grayscale's converted fund charges 1.5%. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) became one of the fastest-growing ETFs ever. Spot ether ETFs followed in July 2024. They sit in ordinary brokerage accounts and IRAs.

Why it matters

They opened bitcoin to mainstream investors, advisers and institutions, and made fund flows a major force in its price.

The SEC's January 2024 approval order, the D.C. Circuit's 2023 Grayscale v. SEC ruling, and fund filings showing daily holdings.

Debates and risks

Whether ETF demand steadies bitcoin or amplifies its swings, and the risk of so much custody concentrated at a few firms such as Coinbase.

Connections (2)

▸Spot bitcoin ETFs (2024) use the structure of Exchange-traded funds (ETFs)Fact, law or data

The connection

Like other ETFs, spot bitcoin funds trade on stock exchanges all day, and large dealers called authorized participants create or redeem shares in blocks, keeping the share price close to the value of bitcoin held. Legally they are trusts registered under the 1933 Act, not 1940 Act funds, so mutual-fund protections such as diversification rules do not apply.

When and why

Approved January 10, 2024; trading began the next day on NYSE Arca, Nasdaq and Cboe. In-kind creation, swapping bitcoin directly for shares, was allowed in July 2025.

How we know

The SEC's approval order and each fund's prospectus describe the structure; funds publish holdings and net asset value daily.

Debates and risks

Whether the arbitrage holds up in a crash, since bitcoin trades 24/7 but ETF shares only during market hours, leaving weekend gaps.

▸Spot bitcoin ETFs (2024) hold BitcoinFact, law or data

The connection

Each fund buys and holds actual bitcoin through custodians, mainly Coinbase, so money flowing into ETF shares becomes bitcoin purchases. That put bitcoin in ordinary brokerage accounts and IRAs. By 2025 the US funds held more than 1 million bitcoin, over one in twenty coins in existence; BlackRock's IBIT is the largest. Fund flows now visibly move prices.

When and why

Since January 2024; issuers include BlackRock, Fidelity, Grayscale, Bitwise, Ark and Franklin Templeton.

How we know

Funds publish their bitcoin holdings daily, and some custodian wallet addresses are visible on the public blockchain.

Debates and risks

How much ETF flows drive bitcoin's price versus follow it, and whether owning bitcoin through Wall Street funds undercuts its original no-middleman purpose.
