The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentration
2023–· Crisis or event
Fact, law or dataA rule, statute, definition or measured number.
Since ChatGPT's late-2022 debut, bets on artificial intelligence have made a handful of tech giants, led by Nvidia, dominate US stock gains.
See it on the Money & Finance map →How it works
Investors are betting that AI will raise productivity and profits, and have bid up chipmaker Nvidia and the 'Magnificent Seven': Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia and Tesla. Nvidia's market value rose from about $360 billion at the end of 2022 to $4 trillion in July 2025 and $5 trillion that October. The biggest tech firms are spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year on data centers. By 2025 the ten largest companies made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500.
Why it matters
Index investors now carry heavy exposure to a few companies and one theme; if AI profits disappoint, broad index funds would feel it more than in past decades.
Think of it like
Like a 'diversified' REIT whose value rests mostly on five trophy towers in one market.
Facts, rules and data
Company filings and earnings reports, S&P Dow Jones Indices weight data and market-value records; Big Tech discloses data-center spending in its quarterly capital-expenditure figures.
Debates and risks
Whether this is a dot-com-style bubble or justified: unlike many 2000 darlings, today's leaders earn large profits, but AI's long-run payoff is unproven.

▸The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentration lifted Big Tech to about a third of The S&P 500 indexFact, law or data
The connection
Because the S&P 500 weights companies by market value, soaring AI-linked stocks automatically took bigger slices. By 2025 the Magnificent Seven were about a third of the index and supplied more than half its gains in 2023 and 2024. Index fund buyers became heavy AI investors whether they meant to or not.
When and why
2023–2025; Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Broadcom and Tesla, with Nvidia alone about 7–8% of the index by late 2025.
How we know
S&P Dow Jones Indices weight data; the top ten's share, near 40%, exceeds the roughly one quarter they held at the 2000 dot-com peak.
Debates and risks
Whether a cap-weighted index this concentrated is still diversified, and whether equal-weighted versions, which lagged, will catch up.
▸The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentration is often compared to Dot-com bubble and bust (2000)Experts disagree
The connection
Both booms rest on a world-changing technology, heavy capital spending and a few stocks driving the index. Bulls note today's leaders earn huge profits and trade at lower multiples than 2000's stars, some of which traded above 100 times earnings; bears point to soaring data-center spending, circular deals and record concentration.
When and why
Compared constantly since ChatGPT's November 2022 launch; by 2025 the ten largest companies made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500, above the 2000 share.
How solid is the link?
Index concentration and valuation data from S&P and others; this is an analogy between eras, not a causal link.
Debates and risks
No one knows whether AI profits will justify the spending; bubbles are usually recognized only after they burst.
▸The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentration bets on future gains in Productivity: output per hour of workExperts disagree
The connection
AI stock prices embed an expectation that AI will make workers far more productive, lifting profits for chipmakers, cloud firms and users. If productivity growth accelerates, as in the late-1990s internet era, prices may prove justified; if gains come slowly, the boom could deflate, as the dot-com bust did in 2000 despite the internet's later payoff.
When and why
From ChatGPT's November 2022 launch onward; Big Tech committed hundreds of billions of dollars a year to data centers in 2024–26.
How solid is the link?
Company forecasts and analyst models tie valuations to AI-driven efficiency; early studies show sizable gains in tasks like coding and customer support, but little yet in national data.
Debates and risks
Estimates of AI's boost to annual US productivity growth range from under 0.1 point (Daron Acemoglu) to about 1.5 points (Goldman Sachs); nobody knows which is closer.
▸KOSPI and KOSDAQ: Korea's stock indexes and the 'Korea discount' surged with Samsung and SK Hynix in The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentrationFact, law or data
The connection
AI servers need high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a market led by SK Hynix, with Samsung catching up. As chip profits soared, the two grew to roughly half of KOSPI's value, and the index rose from about 2,400 at end-2024 to over 9,000 in June 2026 before falling sharply.
When and why
Seoul and Icheon, 2024–26; SK Hynix supplies Nvidia, the leading AI-chip designer.
How we know
KRX market data, company earnings reports, and Korean press coverage of the concentration and the July 2026 selloffs.
Debates and risks
Whether the memory-chip upswing has peaked; analysts disagree on how long AI spending can keep growing.
▸Data centers: the AI-driven building boom is the physical side of The AI stock boom and Big Tech concentrationMainstream view
The connection
AI companies' stock gains rest on spending huge sums on chips, and those chips need buildings, power and cooling. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta spent hundreds of billions of dollars on capital projects in 2025, much of it on data centers. Each dollar of that spending becomes construction, leases and electricity demand.
When and why
Since ChatGPT's launch in late 2022; major clusters in Northern Virginia, Texas, Arizona, Ohio and Louisiana.
How solid is the link?
Company earnings reports and capital-spending guidance, CBRE construction data, and utility load forecasts.
Debates and risks
Whether AI revenue will justify the spending; if growth disappoints, stock prices and building plans could fall together.
