Rice domesticated
c. 9,000–7,000 years ago (China)· Organism or group· Plants & fungi
Strong evidenceGood evidence; dates or details still being refined.
Asian rice was domesticated from a wild marsh grass in China's Yangtze valley, mostly between about 9,000 and 7,000 years ago.

Villages such as Shangshan, in the lower Yangtze valley, were gathering and probably cultivating wild rice about 10,000 years ago. Grains that stayed on the stalk spread only slowly: at Tianluoshan, about 6,600 years ago, they were still under half the harvest. Rice spread across East and Southeast Asia and reached Korea about 3,500–3,000 years ago. Africans domesticated a separate rice species along the Niger River about 3,000 years ago.
Why it matters
Rice now feeds more than half of humanity and shaped East Asian village life around labor-intensive flooded paddies, which also release significant methane.
The evidence (fossils, genes, rocks)
Rice husks used to temper pottery, charred grains and spikelet bases from Yangtze sites, plus ancient paddy fields; genetics points to southern China for the japonica type.
Still debated
Whether rice was domesticated once, with indica rice formed later by crossing in India, or separately in China and India, is still debated.
Connections (2)
▸Agriculture begins arose independently with Rice domesticatedWell established
The connection
Farming was not one invention that spread from one place. In China's Yangtze valley, people independently began cultivating wild rice, while millet farmers did the same to the north along the Yellow River. Rice paddies became the base of East and Southeast Asian farming, much as wheat was in western Asia and Europe.
When and how
Lower Yangtze valley, at sites such as Shangshan, Kuahuqiao, Hemudu and Tianluoshan in Zhejiang province, about 10,000–7,000 years ago.
The evidence
A gradual rise in non-shattering rice spikelet bases at Tianluoshan, about 7,000–6,500 years ago, shows domestication underway, with no link to the Near East.
Debates and open questions
How long cultivation took to become full domestication, and how rice spread from China to Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia and India.
▸Rice domesticated was domesticated independently of Wheat & barley domesticatedWell established
The connection
Rice and wheat-barley are two independent experiments in domestication, roughly 7,000 km apart, with no contact. Yet farmers in both regions selected the same key trait: seeds that stay on the plant. That parallel, also seen in maize and millet, shows people everywhere favored similar traits in different wild grasses.
When and how
Fertile Crescent from about 11,500 years ago; lower Yangtze, China, from about 10,000 years ago; no evidence of contact between them.
The evidence
Different wild ancestors and separate early sites show independent origins; the non-shattering trait arose through mutations in different genes in each crop.
Debates and open questions
Why domestication began in both regions within a few thousand years after the ice age, after so long without farming; climate is the leading explanation.
