Why the Cambrian explosion happened
debated since Darwin (1859)· Theory or idea· Earth, climate & extinctions
DebatedScientists disagree about when, how or why.
The long-running debate over why animal diversity burst out about 539 million years ago, and why not earlier.

Proposed causes fall into three groups. Environment: rising oxygen, nutrients and calcium after the Snowball Earth glaciations, and seas flooding continents. Genes: the Hox toolkit and other control networks were already in place. Ecology: predators, eyes and burrowing set off arms races and opened new niches. A fourth view says part of the burst is a preservation effect, as older soft-bodied lineages became fossilizable. Many researchers now favor several factors combined.
Why it matters
It is a test case for how environment, genetics and ecology interact to produce rapid evolution, and it addresses a puzzle Darwin raised.
Think of it like
Like a building boom: you need zoned land (oxygen), builders with plans (genes) and competing buyers (ecology). The debate is which mattered most.
The evidence (fossils, genes, rocks)
Rock chemistry tracking oxygen and nutrients, gene studies dating the toolkit, fossil records of predation and burrowing, and statistical comparisons of fossil timing.
Still debated
Whether any single trigger dominated, and whether the explosion was a true burst or the visible end of a longer, hidden fuse.

▸Why the Cambrian explosion happened tries to explain Cambrian explosionDebated
The connection
This debate looks for the trigger and fuel of the Cambrian explosion. Candidate explanations, such as oxygen, ocean chemistry, developmental genes, predation and preservation, are each tested against when and where animal groups appear in dated rocks.
When and how
Debated since Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' (1859); modern reviews include Douglas Erwin and James Valentine's 'The Cambrian Explosion' (2013).
How sure are we?
Each hypothesis predicts patterns in fossils, rock chemistry or genes that researchers can check, though none is decisively confirmed.
Debates and open questions
Whether the explosion needs a special explanation at all, or reflects ordinary evolution plus better preservation.
▸Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event is one candidate in Why the Cambrian explosion happenedDebated
The connection
The oxygen hypothesis says animal bodies could not grow large, active or predatory until oxygen rose enough. In this view the Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event lifted a ceiling, and the Cambrian explosion followed once oxygen passed a threshold, perhaps in pulses.
When and how
Oxygen rose about 800–540 million years ago; the idea goes back to J. R. Nursall in 1959 and remains under active study.
How sure are we?
Rock chemistry shows rising and fluctuating oxygen around the Cambrian, and some pulses of animal diversity seem to match oxygen pulses.
Debates and open questions
Sponges and simple animals need little oxygen, and some studies find no rise right before the explosion. Is oxygen cause or consequence?
▸Snowball Earth features as a possible trigger in Why the Cambrian explosion happenedDebated
The connection
Some researchers argue the Snowball glaciations reset ocean chemistry: meltwater delivered nutrients, oxygen may have risen, and survivors found open niches. In this view the deep freeze helped set the stage for complex animals, though roughly 100 million years separate the last Snowball from the explosion.
When and how
Glaciations about 717–635 million years ago; championed by Paul Hoffman and colleagues, who studied Namibian rocks in the 1990s.
How sure are we?
The order of events fits, and post-glacial rocks show nutrient spikes, but a direct cause is hard to test.
Debates and open questions
The long gap before the Cambrian makes a direct trigger doubtful; the glaciations may have mattered more for the Ediacaran organisms.
▸Hox genes: the body-plan toolkit are one proposed factor in Why the Cambrian explosion happenedDebated
The connection
The developmental hypothesis says new body plans required a flexible genetic toolkit. Hox genes and other control networks let animals vary body regions without rebuilding from scratch. Their presence before the Cambrian suggests the toolkit was ready, and that environment or ecology supplied the trigger.
When and how
Toolkit in place before about 555 million years ago; promoted by biologists such as Sean Carroll and Eric Davidson in the 1990s and 2000s.
How sure are we?
Genome comparisons show the toolkit predates the explosion; whether it caused anything is inferred, not demonstrated.
Debates and open questions
If the genes existed earlier, why did diversification wait? Many argue the genes were necessary but not sufficient.
