What happened

Many date K-pop (케이팝) to Seo Taiji and Boys, whose 1992 debut mixed rap, rock and dance in Korean. Agencies such as SM, YG and JYP then built an 'idol' system: years of trainee drills in singing, dance and languages, tightly managed groups such as H.O.T., and marketing across Asia. YouTube took it global: PSY's 'Gangnam Style' (2012) was the first video to pass a billion views, and BTS topped US charts from 2018.

Why it matters

It became South Korea's best-known cultural export, a pillar of the Korean Wave and of the country's soft power.

How we know

Chart and sales data, YouTube view counts, Korea Creative Content Agency export statistics, and journalism and scholarship on the industry.

Still debated

Its starting point is debated, since Korean pop has older roots; so are the costs of strict trainee contracts and how long the idol model can last.

Connections (2)

▸Hallyu (the Korean Wave) is driven by K-popWell documented

The connection

TV dramas started the wave, but from the late 2000s K-pop became its engine: idol groups trained for years by agencies such as SM, YG and JYP, polished videos on YouTube, and organized fans abroad. Psy's 'Gangnam Style' (2012), the first YouTube video to pass one billion views, showed its reach.

When and how

Japan and China from the early 2000s; global after about 2009–12, with groups like Girls' Generation and Big Bang, then BTS and Blackpink.

How we know

YouTube view counts, overseas concert and album sales, and foreign-consumer surveys that often name K-pop as the entry point to Korean culture.

Debates and open questions

Video games actually earn more export revenue than music, so whether K-pop is the wave's engine or just its most visible face is debated.

▸K-pop produced BTSWell documented

The connection

BTS came out of K-pop's idol system of trainee years, tight choreography and agency management, but from a small label without the big three agencies' TV access. Big Hit leaned on members writing their own lyrics and on direct fan contact via YouTube and Twitter, a model others copied.

When and how

Big Hit Entertainment, Seoul, founded by Bang Si-hyuk in 2005; BTS debuted June 13, 2013.

How we know

Industry records, Big Hit and HYBE filings, songwriting credits, and the band's documented social-media history.

Debates and open questions

Whether BTS's success shows the idol system works, or that they succeeded partly by bending its rules.
