What happened

Ma and four partners began with QQ, an instant messenger modeled on Israel's ICQ. Short of cash, they sold a large stake in 2001 to South Africa's Naspers for about $32 million, a holding later worth over $100 billion. Tencent earned money from virtual goods and online games, then launched WeChat in 2011, an 'everything app' for chat, payments, ride-hailing and government services. It owns or holds stakes in game studios like Riot Games and Supercell. Ma's fortune runs to tens of billions.

Impact on society and the economy

WeChat set the model for super-apps that bundle many services, and Tencent's reach made it a target of China's 2020–2022 tech crackdown and of US security concerns.

How we know

Hong Kong stock-exchange filings, Naspers and Prosus reports, user data (WeChat has about 1.4 billion monthly users), and histories of Chinese tech.

Still debated

How independent big Chinese tech firms are from the Communist Party is debated; the Pentagon listed Tencent as a 'Chinese military company' in 2025, which Tencent disputes.

Connections (2)

▸Tencent (Pony Ma) was also targeted by China's tech crackdown (Ant Group IPO halted)Well documented

The connection

Regulators fined Tencent and ordered it to end exclusive music-licensing deals in July 2021, blocked its planned merger of game-streaming sites Huya and Douyu, and limited minors' online gaming to three hours a week from September 2021. Approvals of new games froze for about eight months, and Tencent's market value fell by more than half from its 2021 peak.

When and how

Beijing and Shenzhen, 2021–2022; China's market regulator and its press and publication administration, which licenses games.

How we know

Published regulatory decisions, the gaming rules themselves, and Tencent's stock and earnings records.

Debates

Whether the curbs dented China's tech competitiveness for the long term; by 2023 Beijing was courting tech firms again amid slow growth.

▸Tencent (Pony Ma) competes in payments and cloud with Alibaba (Jack Ma)Well documented

The connection

Tencent's WeChat Pay and Alibaba's Alipay, run by affiliate Ant Group, together handle the large majority of China's mobile payments. WeChat's 2014 digital 'red envelope' cash gifts quickly won share. They also rival each other in cloud computing, and each blocked the other's links and payments in its apps until regulators forced them open in 2021.

When and how

Shenzhen and Hangzhou; the payment fight sharpened at Chinese New Year 2014, which Jack Ma reportedly called a 'Pearl Harbor' attack on Alipay.

How we know

Market-share data from research firms such as iResearch, company filings, and 2021 government orders to unblock links between their apps.

Debates

Current market shares are hard to verify, since China's payment data are not fully public.
