What happened

Bezos, then at the hedge fund D. E. Shaw, picked books because no store could stock them all. Amazon went public in 1997 and kept profits thin for years to cut prices and build warehouses. Prime (2005) locked in shoppers; Amazon Web Services (2006) rented computing to other firms and now earns much of Amazon's profit. He stepped down as CEO in 2021. He also founded Blue Origin rockets. His fortune, mostly Amazon stock, has topped $200 billion; estimates vary.

Impact on society and the economy

Shoppers got low prices and fast delivery; many rival stores lost out, and warehouse pace and injuries drew union drives. A 2023 FTC suit accuses Amazon of illegally maintaining a monopoly.

Fortune, legacy and how we know

Amazon's SEC filings and shareholder letters (the 1997 letter set out his long-term strategy), Brad Stone's histories, and Forbes and Bloomberg wealth estimates.

Still debated

Whether Amazon's low prices reflect efficiency or illegal power over the sellers on its site is the core question in the FTC's pending case.

Connections (6)

▸Sears, Roebuck mail-order catalog built the mail-order model echoed by Jeff Bezos and AmazonMostly agreed

The connection

Sears used railroads, the mail and a huge catalog to sell almost anything to rural Americans, with low prices and money-back guarantees. Bezos built the same idea for the web: one giant store, delivered to the door. Sears, slow to move online, declined and filed for bankruptcy in 2018.

When and how

Chicago, 1890s–1900s, when Rural Free Delivery (1896) and parcel post (1913) widened Sears's reach; Seattle from 1994.

How sure are we?

Business historians and analysts often compare the two; Amazon's model is a parallel, not a direct descendant, though Sears's decline is well documented.

Debates

Why Sears, with a catalog, warehouses and customer trust, failed to become Amazon is debated: weak management, owner Eddie Lampert's cost-cutting, or simple disruption.

▸The internet made possible the online store of Jeff Bezos and AmazonWell documented

The connection

Bezos said he read in 1994 that web use was growing about 2,300% a year and decided to start an online store. The internet's opening to commercial traffic in the early 1990s, and secure web payments from 1994–95, let Amazon take orders from anywhere and offer a catalog no physical store could hold.

When and how

Bellevue, near Seattle, July 1994, in a rented house's garage; Amazon.com opened for business in July 1995.

How we know

Bezos's own accounts and Amazon's founding records; the timing closely tracks the commercial opening of the internet.

Debates

Bezos's founding story has been polished over the years; details like the source of the '2,300%' figure are hard to verify.

▸Jeff Bezos and Amazon survived Dot-com boom and bustWell documented

The connection

Amazon raised heavily during the boom, including a $672 million bond sale in February 2000, just before the crash. Its stock fell over 90%, from about $107 in late 1999 to about $6 in 2001, but that cash let it cut costs, survive and post its first profitable quarter at the end of 2001.

When and how

Seattle, 1999–2002; Amazon cut about 1,300 jobs in January 2001.

How we know

Amazon's SEC filings and stock-price records document the bond, the crash, the layoffs and the 2001 profit.

Debates

How close Amazon came to failing is disputed; Lehman Brothers analyst Ravi Suria warned in 2000 that it could run out of cash within a year.

▸Jeff Bezos and Amazon faces FTC charges in Antitrust cases against Google, Meta, Amazon and AppleWell documented

The connection

In September 2023 the FTC and 17 states sued Amazon, alleging it keeps a monopoly by punishing sellers who offer lower prices elsewhere and by pressing them to buy its warehousing and delivery to qualify for Prime; fees, the FTC says, take nearly half of many sellers' revenue. Amazon says its practices lower prices. Bezos was no longer CEO.

When and how

Federal court in Seattle; the FTC under chair Lina Khan, whose 2017 article 'Amazon's Antitrust Paradox' shaped the case; trial set for 2027.

How we know

The complaint and court filings are public; Judge John Chun let the core claims proceed in 2024. Separately, Amazon paid $2.5 billion in 2025 to settle Prime sign-up charges.

Debates

Whether low prices for shoppers outweigh higher costs for sellers, a trade-off courts have not settled for online marketplaces.

▸Jeff Bezos and Amazon pioneered the cloud computing behind AI data center building boomMostly agreed

The connection

Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006, pioneered renting servers and storage by the hour, turning computing into a utility like electricity. That model lets AI firms rent huge clusters rather than build them. AWS remains the largest cloud provider, and Amazon now spends over $100 billion a year, mostly on data centers, including an Indiana campus for AI firm Anthropic.

When and how

Seattle, 2006, under Andy Jassy; AI expansion from 2023 at sites in Virginia, Indiana, Oregon and elsewhere.

How sure are we?

AWS financial results, Amazon's capital-spending disclosures, and cloud market-share estimates from firms such as Synergy Research.

Debates

Whether general cloud leaders like AWS or specialized AI clouds will capture most AI profits; AWS's share has slipped as Microsoft gained through OpenAI.

▸Alibaba (Jack Ma) became China's answer to Jeff Bezos and AmazonMostly agreed

The connection

Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall became China's main online marketplaces, its Cainiao network handled delivery, and Alibaba Cloud mirrored Amazon Web Services. But the models differ: Alibaba mostly hosts outside sellers and earns from ads and fees, while Amazon long sold much from its own inventory. Amazon closed its Chinese marketplace in 2019.

When and how

Hangzhou from 1999 and Seattle from 1994; Alibaba Cloud launched in 2009, three years after Amazon's.

How sure are we?

Company filings show both firms' structures; analysts commonly call Alibaba 'China's Amazon,' though Jack Ma has contrasted Amazon's 'empire' with Alibaba's 'ecosystem' of outside sellers.

Debates

Whether Amazon lost in China mainly to Alibaba's better local model or to Chinese favoritism toward home firms is debated.
