Zhang (张一鸣, born 1983) bet that recommendation algorithms, not editors, would decide what people see. His news app Toutiao (2012) proved it; Douyin launched in China in 2016 and TikTok abroad in 2017. ByteDance earns from ads, online shopping and live-stream tips; its 2024 revenue, about $155 billion, rivaled Meta's. Zhang, who stepped down as CEO in 2021, is among China's richest people at roughly $50–65 billion; estimates vary. Users and advertisers gained; rivals like Meta lost attention, and critics cite teen screen time.
Impact on society and the economy
It was the first Chinese consumer app to win the world, challenged Meta and Google, and became a test of US–China tech rivalry.
Fortune, legacy and how we know
Company statements and leaked financials reported by Bloomberg and Reuters, app-download data, and US court records over the 2024 law forcing a sale of TikTok's US business.
Still debated
How much influence China's government has over ByteDance and its algorithm is disputed; TikTok's US operations moved into an American-led joint venture in 2025–26, with ByteDance keeping a minority stake.
Connections (2)
▸Facebook / Meta (Mark Zuckerberg) competes for attention with Zhang Yiming and ByteDance (TikTok)Well documented
The connection
TikTok's algorithm-driven feed of short videos pulled young users' time from Facebook and Instagram. Meta answered by copying the format with Instagram Reels (2020) and, The Washington Post reported in 2022, by paying a consulting firm to campaign against TikTok. TikTok's rise was a key reason a federal judge found in 2025 that Meta lacked monopoly power.
When and how
Worldwide from 2018, after TikTok absorbed Musical.ly; Reels launched August 2020; in early 2022 Facebook reported its first-ever drop in daily users.
How we know
User and time-spent data, Meta's earnings statements naming TikTok as a competitor, and court findings in FTC v. Meta.
Debates
Whether US restrictions on TikTok, and its new American-led ownership, will tilt the contest for attention back toward Meta.
▸iPhone and the smartphone platform economy became the platform for Zhang Yiming and ByteDance (TikTok)Mostly agreed
The connection
TikTok was built for the phone: full-screen vertical video, a built-in camera for making clips, and an endless 'For You' feed tuned by tracking what each user lingers on. Zhang Yiming founded ByteDance in 2012 betting that smartphones would make algorithms, not editors, the main way people find content. In China most users reach Douyin on Android phones.
When and how
Beijing, 2012; Douyin 2016; TikTok worldwide from 2017 on iPhones and Android phones.
How sure are we?
App-store download rankings from firms such as Sensor Tower, and ByteDance's own statements about its mobile-first strategy.
Debates
Whether endless short-video feeds harm attention and teen mental health, a question with mixed research and lawsuits against both TikTok and Meta.
