What happened

Congress voted for independence on July 2, 1776, and approved the final wording on July 4. Thomas Jefferson wrote the draft, which John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Congress itself edited. Its second paragraph declares that 'all men are created equal,' with rights to 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,' and that governments draw their power from 'the consent of the governed.' The rest lists 27 grievances against King George III to justify the break.

Why it matters

It turned a colonial tax dispute into a claim of universal rights, a standard later invoked by abolitionists, suffragists and independence movements worldwide.

How we know

The signed parchment at the National Archives in Washington, Jefferson's rough draft showing the edits, the printed Dunlap broadsides of July 1776, and the journals of Congress.

Still debated

How 'all men are created equal' squared with slavery, practiced by Jefferson and many signers, is still debated. Congress cut his passage condemning the slave trade.

Connections (3)

▸John Locke's Two Treatises (natural rights) inspired Declaration of IndependenceWell documented

The connection

Locke's argument that people have natural rights to 'life, liberty and estate,' and may replace a government that abuses them, became the Declaration's core. Jefferson wrote 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,' and justified independence with a list of the king's abuses, which was Locke's test for when revolution is right.

When and how

Philadelphia, June to July 1776; Jefferson drew on Locke and other writers widely read in the colonies.

How we know

Jefferson named Locke, with Bacon and Newton, among the three greatest men who ever lived, and the Declaration's wording closely echoes the Second Treatise.

Debates and open questions

Why Jefferson swapped 'property' for 'pursuit of happiness' is debated; other influences included Scottish Enlightenment thinkers and English republican writers.

▸Declaration of Independence proclaimed the aims of the American RevolutionWell documented

The connection

Fifteen months into the fighting, the Declaration turned a rebellion for colonists' rights as Englishmen into a war for a new nation. It made a foreign alliance possible, since France could not openly back rebels still professing loyalty to the king, and it gave soldiers and citizens a stated cause.

When and how

Philadelphia, July 4, 1776; read aloud to Washington's troops in New York on July 9 and printed in newspapers across the colonies.

How we know

Congressional journals, Washington's general orders of July 9, 1776, newspaper printings, and France's formal alliance with the US in 1778.

Debates and open questions

How much ordinary soldiers and colonists were moved by its ideals, versus local grievances, pay and loyalty to neighbors, is debated.

▸Declaration of Independence was rewritten at Seneca Falls to demand Women's suffrageWell documented

The connection

At Seneca Falls in 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton modeled the Declaration of Sentiments on the 1776 Declaration, line by line: 'all men and women are created equal.' In place of King George's abuses, it listed men's injustices toward women. Its most controversial demand, which barely passed, was the right to vote.

When and how

Seneca Falls, New York, July 19 to 20, 1848; about 300 attended and 100 signed, including Frederick Douglass, who spoke up for the vote resolution.

How we know

The Declaration of Sentiments survives in print, with its 100 signatures and its deliberate echo of the 1776 text.

Debates and open questions

Historians debate whether Seneca Falls really launched the movement, or whether later accounts by Stanton and Susan B. Anthony gave it that founding role.
