Born in 1978 in Kryvyi Rih to a Russian-speaking Jewish family, Zelensky played a fictional president in the TV series 'Servant of the People' before winning 73% of the vote in 2019. He stayed in Kyiv when Russia attacked in February 2022 and rallied Western support. His five-year term ended in 2024, but martial law bars elections; Moscow calls him illegitimate, while most Ukrainians want a vote only after peace. A 2025 corruption scandal cost him his powerful chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
Why it matters
His choices on territory, ceasefire terms and elections will shape any settlement, and his rapport with Washington has repeatedly swung Western support.
Record
Official election results, his speeches and decrees, and regular polls by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, which put trust in him around 60% in early 2026.
What to watch
Whether he would run in a postwar election, and whether he could accept a deal that freezes Russian control of occupied land.

▸Volodymyr Zelensky leads UkraineFact
The relationship
Zelensky governs Ukraine under martial law, directing the war effort, appointing military chiefs and leading diplomacy with Washington and Europe. Martial law postpones elections, so he stays in office until a successor is elected, a delay Moscow uses to question his legitimacy.
Since when and why
Kyiv; elected April 2019; martial law declared February 24, 2022 and repeatedly extended by parliament.
How we know
Ukraine's constitution and martial-law statutes, the 2019 official results, and a February 2025 parliamentary vote affirming he serves until a successor is elected.
What to watch
Disputed: Russia says his term expired in 2024; Ukraine says he serves until a successor takes office. When a postwar election could be held is unknown.
▸Volodymyr Zelensky negotiates in US-brokered Ukraine peace talksFact
The relationship
Zelensky speaks for Ukraine and must approve any deal. He accepts a ceasefire along current lines but rejects giving up unoccupied land and insists on Western security guarantees. He has courted Trump since their February 2025 Oval Office clash while leaning on European backers to stiffen US terms.
Since when and why
Washington, Paris, Berlin and other capitals, 2025–26; chief of staff Andriy Yermak led talks until resigning in November 2025, then security chief Rustem Umerov.
How we know
His public statements and nightly addresses, joint declarations with European leaders, and readouts of meetings with Trump and US envoys.
What to watch
Debated: whether elections, postponed under martial law, must precede a deal; Russia questions his legitimacy, which Kyiv and its allies reject.
