The 193-member world body founded in 1945 to prevent another world war, now squeezed by budget cuts and great-power deadlock.

Its Charter was signed in San Francisco in June 1945. The General Assembly gives every state one vote but passes mostly non-binding resolutions; the Security Council can bind members; the Secretariat, led by António Guterres until December 2026, runs daily work; agencies handle refugees, food, health and peacekeeping. Its 2026 core budget was cut about 15%, with nearly a fifth of posts eliminated, after the US, which is assessed 22% of the regular budget, slashed payments and in January 2026 quit 31 UN entities.
Why it matters
It is the only forum where every country sits, the source of legal authority for sanctions and peacekeeping, and a barometer of world order.
Key facts and numbers
The UN Charter, the General Assembly's December 2025 budget decision, the January 2026 US withdrawal memorandum, and UN financial reports on unpaid dues. As of 2026.
What to watch
Outlook: who succeeds Guterres; Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan led September 2026 straw polls, but any permanent Security Council member can veto a candidate.

▸United Nations has lost funding from United StatesFact
The relationship
The US, long the UN's largest funder and payer of 22% of its regular budget, cut contributions in 2025–26, left the WHO, announced its exit from UNESCO, ended aid to UNRWA and withheld dues. The shortfall forced the UN to cut its 2026 budget and thousands of jobs.
Since when and why
New York and Geneva, from January 2025 executive orders through a January 2026 order withdrawing from 66 international bodies, many in the UN system.
How we know
UN budget documents, the Secretary-General's statements on arrears, US executive orders, and WHO records of the US exit, effective January 2026.
What to watch
Whether China and others fill the gap and gain influence, and whether a December 2025 US pledge of $2 billion for reformed UN humanitarian aid signals partial re-engagement.
▸UN Security Council and the P5 veto is the power center of United NationsFact
The relationship
The Charter gives the Council 'primary responsibility' for international peace, and only its decisions bind all members. It also recommends new members and the Secretary-General to the General Assembly, so permanent members' vetoes shape who joins and who leads the UN, as in the 2026 race to succeed António Guterres.
Since when and why
UN Charter, signed in San Francisco on June 26, 1945, Articles 24, 25 and 97.
How we know
The Charter text, membership votes, and the Council's straw polls on Secretary-General candidates held from July 2026.
What to watch
Whether the General Assembly, where there is no veto, can gain influence when the Council deadlocks, as it has on Ukraine since 2022.
▸Palestinian statehood and the two-state debate is pursued through observer status at United NationsFact
The relationship
Lacking full membership, Palestine presses its statehood case at the UN. The General Assembly made it a non-member observer state in 2012 and granted extra rights in 2024, but the US vetoed full membership in the Security Council in April 2024. Major 2025 recognitions were announced at the UN.
Since when and why
UN headquarters, New York: General Assembly vote of November 29, 2012 (138–9); US veto on April 18, 2024; recognition summit on September 22, 2025.
How we know
General Assembly resolutions 67/19 and ES-10/23, Security Council voting records and UN membership rules.
What to watch
Full membership needs Security Council approval, so a US veto blocks it; whether recognition without control of borders changes facts on the ground is debated.
