The picture

About 63 million people; GDP about $400 billion. A parliamentary republic; since 2024 the ANC has governed in a coalition with the pro-business Democratic Alliance and others. Strengths: Africa's deepest stock market, independent courts and central bank, about 70% of the world's mined platinum. Weaknesses: unemployment above 30%, crime, power and rail failures, inequality. Member of BRICS, the AU and the G20; ties with Washington are at a low. Investing: country ETFs and Johannesburg-listed miners, banks and Naspers.

Why it matters

It is the only African country in the G20 and a leading Global South voice, as in its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Key facts and numbers

Statistics South Africa, the South African Reserve Bank, IMF data, election results and US Geological Survey platinum figures. Figures as of 2026.

What to watch

Outlook: whether the coalition lasts to the 2029 election and delivers faster growth, and whether relations with the US can be repaired.

▸Cyril Ramaphosa leads South AfricaFact

The relationship

Elected by Parliament, South Africa's president is both head of state and head of government. Ramaphosa leads the ANC and, since 2024, a ten-party Government of National Unity in which the Democratic Alliance holds key ministries, so he must bargain over policy.

Since when and why

Pretoria and Cape Town; first elected in February 2018 after Jacob Zuma resigned, re-elected by the new Parliament in June 2024.

How we know

Parliamentary election records, the coalition's statement of intent and cabinet appointments.

What to watch

Whether coalition fights, such as those over the 2025 budget and land expropriation, break up the government early.

▸South Africa is a member of BRICS and its 2024–25 expansionFact

The relationship

South Africa joined the original four, adding the 'S' and an African voice. It hosted the 2023 Johannesburg summit that invited six new members, the bloc's first big expansion. Pretoria sees BRICS as a vehicle for nonalignment, which has strained ties with Washington, already tense over its genocide case against Israel.

Since when and why

Invited in December 2010; first summit April 2011 in Sanya, China; Johannesburg summit, August 22–24, 2023.

How we know

BRICS summit records and the 2023 Johannesburg II Declaration announcing the invitations.

What to watch

Whether South Africa's economy, far smaller than China's or India's, gives it real weight in the bloc, and whether US pressure forces a choice.

▸South Africa brought a genocide case at the ICJ against IsraelFact

The relationship

South Africa, citing its own history of apartheid, accused Israel of breaching the Genocide Convention in Gaza. In January 2024 the UN's top court ordered Israel to prevent genocidal acts and allow aid, without ruling on the merits. Israel calls the case baseless and says it is fighting Hamas lawfully.

Since when and why

International Court of Justice, The Hague; filed December 29, 2023; provisional orders in January, March and May 2024; a final ruling is expected years later.

How we know

ICJ filings and orders, public hearings and statements by both governments; more than a dozen states have joined or backed the case.

What to watch

Disputed at the core: whether Israel's conduct meets genocide's legal test of intent. Scholars and governments are sharply divided, and the court has not decided.
