Born in 1951 to a prominent economist's family, Prabowo commanded Indonesia's special forces and was discharged in 1998 over the abduction of pro-democracy activists; he denies wrongdoing and was never tried. After losing presidential races in 2014 and 2019 he became defense minister, then won in 2024 with 58.6%, with outgoing President Joko Widodo's son as running mate. He launched free school meals, the Danantara state investment fund and an 8% growth goal, joined BRICS, and pledged troops for a Gaza stabilization force.
Why it matters
He runs the world's fourth most populous nation and largest Muslim-majority democracy, courting Washington, Beijing and Moscow while concentrating power at home.

What to watch
Disputed: critics see a slide toward strongman rule and a bigger role for the military; supporters credit decisive leadership. Whether his spending is affordable is debated.
