The picture

A career infantry officer, he headed military intelligence and briefly the ISI spy agency (2018–19). He became army chief in November 2022 and cracked down on Imran Khan's party after riots in May 2023. After the May 2025 clash with India he was made field marshal, only Pakistan's second. A November 2025 constitutional amendment made him head of all armed forces with a fresh five-year term, plus lifelong rank and legal immunity. In 2026 he was a lead mediator in US–Iran talks.

Why it matters

He steers Pakistan's dealings with India, the US, China, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan; his rapport with Trump reset US–Pakistan relations in 2025.

Record

Official appointment notices, the text of the 27th Amendment, statements by the military's press wing (ISPR) and White House readouts, including his June 2025 lunch with Trump.

What to watch

Disputed: whether he is building a de facto military regime or stabilizing the country; critics point to jailed opponents and curbs on the courts.

▸Field Marshal Asim Munir holds real power in PakistanWidely agreed

The relationship

Pakistan's army ruled directly for about three decades and has steered from behind the scenes for much of the rest. Munir has gone further: a 2025 amendment made him head of all armed forces into 2030, and he personally handles diplomacy with Washington, Riyadh, Beijing and Tehran while PM Shehbaz Sharif runs the government.

Since when and why

Army chief since November 29, 2022; field marshal since May 2025; Chief of Defence Forces since December 2025, on a five-year term.

How solid?

The 27th Amendment text, appointment notices and his role at summits; 'real power' is analysts' judgment, and the government says civilian rule is intact.

What to watch

Whether courts and parliament keep any check on him, and what becomes of jailed ex-PM Imran Khan, the army's main political rival.

▸Field Marshal Asim Munir led Pakistan's military in India–Pakistan clash (Operation Sindoor)Fact

The relationship

As army chief, Munir directed Pakistan's response, 'Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos', with drones, missiles and artillery, while Pakistan's air force claimed several Indian jets. Pakistan presented the clash as a victory, and the government promoted Munir to field marshal, raising his power at home and his standing in Washington.

Since when and why

Retaliation peaked May 10, 2025; the promotion came May 20. Days before Pahalgam, Munir had called Kashmir Pakistan's 'jugular vein'.

How we know

Statements by the military's press wing (ISPR), the cabinet's promotion notice and his June 2025 White House lunch with Trump.

What to watch

Disputed: India cites his April speech as incitement before Pahalgam, which Pakistan rejects; battle claims on both sides remain unverified.
