NATO Article 5 (collective defense)
Invoked once, after 9/11· Treaty or event
FactTreaties, membership, measured data, events.
The North Atlantic Treaty's core promise: an armed attack on one NATO member counts as an attack on all.
See it on the Geopolitics map →The picture
Signed in Washington on April 4, 1949, Article 5 says an armed attack on any member in Europe or North America is an attack on all, and each ally will respond with 'such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force.' So it does not force automatic war. It has been invoked once, on September 12, 2001, after the 9/11 attacks on the US. NATO says major cyber or space attacks could also trigger it.
Why it matters
It is the alliance's deterrent: an aggressor must expect to fight all 32 members, including three nuclear powers. Doubts about US resolve are a key driver of Europe's rearmament.
Think of it like
Like a mutual-aid pact among neighboring owners: a fire at one building brings everyone's crews, though each decides what to send.
Key facts and numbers
The 1949 treaty text; the North Atlantic Council's statement of September 12, 2001, confirmed October 2; and summit declarations, including The Hague in 2025, reaffirming an 'ironclad' commitment.
What to watch
Debated: whether it would hold in a real test, especially against drones, sabotage or cyberattacks short of open war, and how firmly Trump's Washington would respond.

▸NATO rests on NATO Article 5 (collective defense)Fact
The relationship
NATO exists to make the Article 5 promise believable: its integrated command, shared defense plans, forward battlegroups and US nuclear weapons in Europe turn words into capability. New members join mainly for this guarantee, as Finland and Sweden did after Russia's 2022 invasion.
Since when and why
Washington, April 4, 1949, with 12 founding members; Finland joined in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, bringing NATO to 32.
How we know
The North Atlantic Treaty text, NATO's command structure and force plans, and accession records.
What to watch
Debated: whether NATO's credibility rests mostly on US power, and whether Europe could deter Russia on its own if Washington stepped back.
▸NATO Article 5 (collective defense) shields PolandFact
The relationship
Since joining NATO in 1999, Poland has been covered by Article 5's pledge that an attack on one ally is an attack on all. That promise, backed by roughly 10,000 US troops and a NATO battlegroup on its soil, is the core of its security. When Russian drones entered its airspace in 2025, allied jets shot some down.
Since when and why
Poland joined NATO on March 12, 1999; on September 10, 2025, about 20 Russian drones crossed into Poland, which invoked Article 4 consultations, not Article 5.
How we know
The 1949 treaty text, NATO deployment records and the Eastern Sentry mission NATO launched after the incursions.
What to watch
Article 5 lets each ally choose its response, so it is not automatic war; how NATO would answer hybrid attacks below that threshold, and US resolve, are debated.
