Jacob's favorite son, sold into slavery by jealous brothers, who rises to govern Egypt and saves his family from famine.
See it on the Bible & Christianity map →What it is
Jacob gives Joseph a special robe (the 'coat of many colors'); his brothers sell him to traders bound for Egypt (Genesis 37). Jailed on a false charge, he interprets Pharaoh's dreams of seven fat and seven thin cows: seven years of plenty, then famine. Pharaoh makes him second in command. When his brothers come to buy grain, he forgives them, and Jacob's family, 70 people, settles in Goshen.
Why it matters
It explains how Israel came to be in Egypt, setting up the Exodus. 'You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good' (Genesis 50:20) is a key line on providence.
Think of it like
Like a building's replacement reserve: Joseph sets aside a fifth of every good harvest (Genesis 41:34) to carry the lean years.
Life, legacy and sources
No Egyptian record names Joseph. But Semitic officials did rise in Egypt, and the Hyksos, Semitic rulers of northern Egypt c. 1650–1550 BC, show Canaanites settling there. Some details fit later Egypt.
Questions and debates
Whether the story preserves a real figure, perhaps a Hyksos-era official, or is a later literary tale is debated.
Connections (2)
▸Jacob, renamed Israel was the father of Joseph, sold into slavery in EgyptFaith & scripture
The connection
Joseph is the first son of Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife, and Jacob openly favors him. That favoritism, shown by the special robe, provokes his brothers to sell him into slavery, which unexpectedly puts Joseph in Egypt in time to save the whole family from famine.
When and where
In Canaan, near Shechem and Dothan, where the brothers sell Joseph to traders (Genesis 37).
How do we know?
Scripture only. The Joseph story is a tightly crafted narrative; many scholars see it as a self-contained novella, possibly written separately and woven in.
Questions and debates
Two tribes are named for Joseph's own sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, rather than for Joseph; how these tribal traditions grew is debated.
▸Joseph, sold into slavery in Egypt brought Jacob's family to Egypt before The Exodus from EgyptFaith & scripture
The connection
Because Joseph rose to power, Jacob and his sons settle in Goshen during the famine. The family multiplies over generations until a new Pharaoh 'who did not know Joseph' fears them and enslaves them (Exodus 1:8). Joseph's success is thus the backstory to Israel's slavery.
When and where
Egypt's eastern Nile Delta (Goshen); Exodus 12:40 says Israel lived in Egypt 430 years.
How do we know?
A narrative bridge within the Torah; Exodus 13:19 has Moses carry Joseph's bones out of Egypt, tying the two stories together.
Questions and debates
Scholars debate whether the Joseph story and the Exodus were once separate traditions, and whether Semitic settlement under the Hyksos inspired either.
